Hi all. Was just reading my latest copy of AMC & spotted a pic of a VW Beetle (#54A) which was raced @ Bathurst in 1963 by a chap called Barry Ferguson. As I think this will make a really cool & interesting classic Bathurst car for my collection and I just happen to have an old Airfix VW kit kicking around, I have started converting a Scalectrix Lotus 7 chassis as a doner for the VW body as we speak. My queries are...

1:The car looks like it is white with black 54A numbers ( I know - its a B&W photo.... :D ) Can any one please tell me the colour of the stripe which runs up the middle?

2:There also seems to be some wrting on the front quarter panel just behind & above the guard, which is to small to read & what I think may be the drivers names on the door.

3:Also, does the #54A appear on the back deck lid?

4: Is there any other signage on the car?

Any help, greatly recieved.

Cheers!

If you can hang until tomorrow, I'll post a colour pic from one of the Chevron books. Its the same pale base colour as gazza posted with a mint-green stripe definitely not dark green. The headlights are also taped over in a slightly darker green. Can't see the boot. The interior is dark red vinyl. The bumper appears to be frosted-silver, not chrome. Only sign writing is the drivers names in small print on the door and I think 'Lannock Motors' just i front of the doors.

Howdy
As KK suggests it could be Lannock Motors but it could also be Lennox Motors, both Sydney VW dealers at the time.

I found this forum while doing a search you may be able to confirm here.

I think you might find this was Lennock Motors, a Canberra Dealer... along with Ray Gulson I believe they were both involved in Bathurst for many many years....

Sorry for the delay...

I couldn't confirm the entrant, but the drivers were Bill Ford/Barry Ferguson.

Yep, they were. They were the poverty pack dak-daks and there was hardly any chrome on them anywhere and they were pretty basic. The aim was to compete in a lower price category (might have been a slight weight saving as well :) .

The sister car numbered 53 is a lot more famous, why not do that one. Might have to get permission from Disney though

Gee, I Really Should know that,..as I used to work for VW Australia in the Late 60's and Early 70's in both the NSW and National Marketing divisions!

I used to pick up Mr Lennock from the Airport and drive him to our offices North Ryde, (He used to Like the way I Drove and I would take him Through the more Scenic parts of Sydney, He reckoned all the Other Bastards used to take him through all the Factory areas), He was a Lovely Old Gentleman.

BUT, I am Reasonably sure that the Car was entered by Lannock Motors from Sydney, as they were one of the Original Appointees of VW and were always rather Closely Linked to Both Motor Producers Limited and VW Australia and LNC as it became later.

I Might be wrong ofcourse, that Was a Long time ago!

 .

I always remember VW Germany's Representative out here, was a Guy Called Julie Jacubasa who was an amazingly Flamboyant German with a Great character and sense of Humour, He always Wore Polka Dot Shirts and Tyes, in Red and Black and White etc,..a Real Character !!

Mind you I Did find the celebration (By Some ex Pat Germans of Hitlers Birthday somewhat disturbing) !!,..Ahh but that Was a Long Time ago !,...
