Last year I had the pleasure of visiting Phil in Tasmania and spending the evening racing with his Group, great guys and I hope to repeat the experience soon.
As a result of the visit Phil sent me a couple of his superb resin shells.

After several "prompts" from the Master I have finally got round to starting the Capri.......

I made a start on the chassis, which is a pretty straight forward.
I used as a basis the spare chassis that Maurizio gave away with some of the Sauber Mercedes, it was of course, too long and too wide, so I trimmed the side pans and shortened it. The easiest way to do this is to remove some plastic behind the front body mounting point. A little reinforcing was added in the form of wood strips.

The anglewinder mount required a long can motor so I thought I would try the 23K Scaleauto, a new experience for me but they are half the price of a Slot.it, all the rest of the running gear will be Slot.it and BWA wheels will be used. Tyres will probably be MJK's on the rears.

No progress on the body I'm afraid, but I need to get some decals for the Moffat car. I thought Bruce Patterson did some but I can't find any reference to them on his website. Does anyone else know where I can get any from?.

More details to follow........

Regards

Alan

Alan: Glad that you have to get a lot further building it than I did. Please keep the pics coming. I don't know that anyone does the MOFF decals, but I am sure that some one does the factory decals in 1/32. i will ask our resident Moff man, Bruce and let you know.

Phil

Hello Alan

The Slot It chassis adaptation is an interesting one - should be a rocket. I am going to try and finish mine now - you have inspired me!. I am ready to apply the blue and have some decals which go part of the way to doing the Moffat car. I am going to make up the rest myself - quite happy to share them when I have done them. I found that a Ninco Renault Clio chassis is a perfect fit. Wheelbase is spot on and I have used some Fly Porsche 934 wheels. The rear Fly axle has a perfect track and the front axle has worked out fine. Here is mine as it is now - good coat of Tamiya white - it has been curing for about 8 months now!

Hi Guys thanks for the comments and help.

Bruce......Great looking car, you've obviously worked hard on the shell!....I've been at work with the files all morning!.

I was going to use the 934 wheels, but I've since decided to go with BWA, as I wanted set screws. I'm hoping some Slot.it inserts will fit, if not I've got plenty of Fly wheels I can cut down and the ones Phil sent me, so plenty of choice.

I checked out the decals on Bruces site this morning and it would appear you can get a lot of the ones used on this car in other sets he does.

Australian Touring cars 1968-73, Ford Motorcraft, Ford Falcon XR and Ford Falcon Allan Moffat/Vern Schppan. What they don't cover is the PANAM decals (Large and small), Moffat Racing and the pin striping, which I would have thought is pretty difficult to do.

This is the best picture I could find which is I think a 1/18th scale model, I also found a long range front shot, but no photo of the rear of the car....

Posted Image

Is this photo pretty much correct?....or do I need to do yet more research?......I guess the correct blue is the one Pan Am used on their planes?......what are you going to use?....

I understand the real car is now located in NZ (Christchurch?), so perhaps someone can take some photo's.. :)

If it helps, I have a 1:28 plasitc kit (Nitto?) I have not built yet of a works car. The detail is not as good as a Tamiya kit, but it comes with a sheet of decals including blue Pan Am lettering and wide and narrow stripes to be applied to the white body. The blue is the wrong shade but if it helps anybody I can scan it.

I also have good quality images of the car in AM's workshop if you want to see close-ups of some of the sponsors signage.

Let me know.

I've got a little farther with the build..... :D , really to the same point as Bruce!....I would like to add the blue paint but I'm stuck now as I don't know what the rear end of the car looks like.

From what I remember of these early Capri's, the road cars anyway, had a matt black panel between the light clusters, is it the same on this car?....Any photo's would be helpful.

Here's the twin to Bruce's car.. :-

Posted Image

I changed the front tyres from Slot.it to SCX ribbed, and they seem to have settled down the skittish front end....The car now performs very well, and once the new (Blue) Ortmans have settled down and finished curing!(just don't ask).....the car should set some competitive lap times.

For inserts I cut down some Slot.it Porsche 956 BBS ones and they look pretty good with the BWA wheels...I'm not sure Al would be over the moon about it.....

Hi KarKraft.....Any help would be appreciated, especially in the decal area. If you could scan your decals it would be very useful.

Regards

Alan

PS I've also just got the Toyota S800...which I want to turn into the car that competes in the Tasssie Targa in the very pretty turquoise and white livery. Any photo's of this car appreciated...

PPS.....Also the Falcon shell you sent me Phil.....Do you have a photo of the Moffat livery for this car?, is it the reddish one with two black bonnet stripes?..

Hi Beejay

Here is a link to one of several pages about the car in its current hands.

http://www.geocities...ages/nzcc7a.jpg

Obviously the sponsors are wrong, but AM's car had a 'Goodyear' on the rear of the spoiler, a Ford 'Oval' between the tail lights and a 'Motorcraft' between the oil coolers in the rear beaver panel.

Here are the decals, but I now notice they are basically stripes only:

The owner is listed as Roger Townshend from NZ.
The magazine listing is as a

1972 Ford Capri RS 2600 (Cologne Capri)

The nice touch about it is, he even got Klaus Ludwig's helmet colours.
BEEJAY7, will have a closer look, if you need other shots.

Cheers

At long last I have finished the Capri........The main holdups were a) building Proxy cars :D running Proxy events c) Paint shade and decals for this little devil!....

These are the finished shots :-

Posted Image

Posted Image

The decals were made for me by Gary at the Wolves Club (LMP on Slot Forum), (after we got into conversation during a visit to my track where he helped me run the 1.5 litre GP Proxy cars). Gary did lots of research on the colours used by PanAm because I still consider that to be the blue used on this car. Gary's decals are correct, my body paint isn't, close but not quite there........All the pinstripes are decals, the front bonnet stripe and lower body are sprayed.

Headlights are Scalextric replica Mini Cooper Lucas units which you can get from a Company called Slotbug in the UK.

Chassis is modified from a Slot.it Sauber Mercedes, using the Anglewinder option, Motor is a long can Scaleauto 25K unit, Slot.it.gears/axles/guide and front wheels are used, BWA rears. Front tyres are SCX and rears Ortman........

I'm pleased to say the car goes very well and would have made a good entry to last years DUPR.

It is a very important car to me as it will always remind me of my visit to Australia and NZ, and especially the great time I had at Phil's track in Tassie......Good on ya mate!, and thanks for a wonderful car.

Regards

Alan
