Round three will be held over the weekend of 3/4 May on JoeZ's Scalex track with qualifying probably on Friday night. I'll post times, pix and comments on each car. The only tyre preparation allowed on this track will be cleaning with a wet cloth (unless someone deposits a large donation in my St George account) :)

Joe’s track has been around for quite a while and is super smooth. No bumps or ripples so quick cars have no problem putting the power down. Add to that a nice layer of rubber which never gets rubbed off and you have the recipe for a quick lap

Posted Image

A quick lap time is under 7 seconds. The official lap record is 6.43 with a Proslot Toyota GT1. Hellrazors Proxy car did 6.48 in practice a couple of months ago so anything faster than the Renault R5 would have to be something pretty special. The track suits powerful cars and with 4 lanes and 3 or 4 minute heats + qualifying you can be sure you car will get a workout. All the drivers are older than Ben Hur and I can predict some pretty wild racing next weekend without (hopefully) any carnage although I can’t guarantee the safety of any cars from Tasmania.

It has been rumored that turn 2 at the left of the picture might have been built on a sacred site. The original inhabitants of the land were expelled 200 years ago by an ex Tassie land baron who bought up the whole valley for a bag of beads and some Midnight Oil LP’s. The old inhabitants have plotted revenge ever since and have vowed retribution on anyone (or anything) from the Apple Isle. Will that happen this week?

We’ll just have to wait and see. :)

Cheers

Paul

A sacred site? Midnight Oil LP's? No wonder I have splitting headaches ever since my car ran through that corner. :D

Cheers,

Jan

Cars have arrived safely at Joe's thanks to Bo and qualifying will be done tonight. Pix and times to be posted late tonight.

Will someone break the lap record? Stay tuned!

Cheers

Lucky the tracks not in Melbourne, or we'd have a WET qualifying session! :) ;)

Good luck to all racers, have fun guys!

The qualifying has been done and the lap record still stands, but it was close! This track suits fast cars and it showed with powerful motors dominating the results. Anything under 7 seconds for a lap is pretty quick and more than half the field managed to do it.

Posted Image Ist Hellrazor 6.46 .03 seconds off the lap record. Bloody fast, not easy to drive. Wicked down the straights and corners pretty good too
Posted Image

Posted Image 2nd Antony 6.67 Smooth, good all rounder, felt very tight, accelerates and stops very well
Posted Image

Posted Image 3rd Sprint 6.69 Ample power, bit taily, a real point-and-squirt car
Posted Image

Posted Image 4th Sports Racer 6.74 Quick, easy to drive
Posted Image

Posted Image 5th Aastes 6.77 Who would believe an Anglia in the top 5! This car sticks like the proverbial. Steps out when pushed hard but the front end refuses to let go. Really nice to drive and looks fantastic on the track

Posted Image 6th Magoo 6.81 Quick but deslots when pushed hard. Too light in the front end?
Posted Image

Posted Image 7th Fangio 6.83 Smooth but can be unpredictable
Posted Image

Posted Image equal 7th McGregor 6.83 Fast as Hellrazors in a straight line but didn't handle the corners as well
Posted Image

Posted Image 9th Devious Dave 6.85 Super smooth but deslots when pushed hard. Car might be better if owner had some more experience setting up Proxy cars :stretch:
Posted Image

Posted Image 10th Sidecar Steve 6.87 Weirdest looking XJ6 I've ever seen. :devil2: Quick and drivable

Posted Image 11th Epsix 6.88 Smooth, quick in a straight line
Posted Image

Posted Image 12th Mopardevil 6.92 Better suited to a 50 foot straight
Posted Image

Posted Image 13th Bitman 6.92 Light front, tends to lift, bit chattery
Posted Image

Posted Image 14th Oswald 6.93 Dancing back end
Posted Image

Posted Image 15th Kalbfell 7.08 Smooth but heavy. Took quite a few laps pushing harder and harder before it finally deslotted. This is a heavy car and felt it. Needs more motor to suit this track

Posted Image 23rd Manic 7.48 Taily, too low geared
Posted Image

Posted Image 24th Imkouwell 7.52 Sluggish, a bit tippy, just like the real thing when powered by the starfire motor :devil2:
Posted Image

Posted Image 25th Oldslot 7.72 Not enough speed
Posted Image

Posted Image 26th Hmscat 7.88 Unstable
Posted Image

Posted Image DNQ Eno guide jams in slot, PM sent
Posted Image After the race I had a drive and this is the only car I've ever run that wobbles down the straight! Very top heavy and the tyres grip too much making it a very slow car through corners or it tips over. Add to this the guide is BEHIND the front wheels and you get a very twitchy car. If the tyres aren't cleaned then it slides a bit and becomes much easier to drive.

Paul,
thanks for the extra hustle to keep the R5 on the road! IMHO pretty, pretty, pretty good driving! I can live with 6.46 :devil2:
The pics are excellent. It's very interesting to see everybody's chassis.
When did you get to go to bed??? Looks like you stayed up pretty late to post the pics and the notes. Thanks!

Cheers,

jan

Well done Jan, your car was clearly the fastest. The rest of the positions were close, with only a couple of laps separating the top 7 cars and the rest following closely behind. A very good class of cars this year, well done all those that entered.
