Final Scrutineering and weigh in results.

Tonight with the help of Son of Sidecar I completed scrutineering. All the cars (except two) have been fully checked for compliance with the regs and have been weighed.

Also, I ran all the cars against the clock to establish a best time.

The results were interesting, especially the weight.

Here are some observations
  • The lightest car is 74grams
  • The heaviest car 145grams
  • The quickest car posted a best time of 6.42 seconds which is also the fastest lap ever on this track.
  • The slowest car posted a best time of 7.56 seconds
  • The fastest car has an in-line motor and is one of the lightest cars.
  • The fastest sidewinder car was 0.14 seconds behind and weighs 15grams more.
My track is 17 metres in each lane, runs at 10 volts and uses Parma Econo 25 ohm handles. It is surfaced with ferrador (St Enoch grey which I think is the least abrasive in the range), the lane spacing is 95mm and has magnabraid rails. The track has a good mix of corners and is not a fast flowing track by any stretch of the imagination! Timing is handled by a Dingo Timer program.

The cars were run in the middle (blue) lane for ten laps to set a best time. The track is probably still a little "green" as it is only one month old.

Here is a rundown on the final scrutineering, weigh in and time trial.

I have to admit to being surprised at the results which turned some of my perceptions on their heads.

The most satisfying part was that my car was way faster than I thought it would be :aussie:
cheers!

Great news!

I Was shocked to see that my car was over 70mm at front arches! I trust the scrutineer though, more than i trust my building! Was suprised to be that quick on such a twisty track to be honest! It was tuned on a track that was fairly flowing with a 5m straight!

Its excellent to see that the cars are so close!

Its going to be good to watch which cars hang in there around the same times and the ones that will fall apart! :aussie:

Noticed Eno's down as an entrant in the proxy!

2 weeks delay is bad enough but 2 years while he builds a car ....... that's a bit much :aussie:  :P :P :P :P

thanks for all the hard work steve.
the little audi can get a wiggle on when under the gun.
the american flag was added when the glue i was using for the interior was too "hot" for the plastic and bubbled through.
i didn't want to be so "in your face" with the flag but had to use something with a little backing to it.
good luck everyone.

Yeah, sorry about the small-ness of the print, it was late and looked ok on my laptop......

It was a very interesting night as it was hotter than Hades in the shed (Wonder if I can sneak aircond past the missus!!) and with the doors and windows open to catch the breeze, every flying insect in the neighbourhood thought it was open house! Had to Mortein regularly and vacuum the corpses off the track!

That aside, it shattered all my preconceptions of what cars would be quickest. No surprise that Sprint's Capri was quick but I didn't expect it to be that quick. And I definitely didn't think my car would be top 3 as almost all the setup was done on the workbench by guesswork and tested on the Kinglemann at Mobile Raceways.

As far as a shakedown goes, it highlighted some issues with a couple of cars. Aastes car was damaged just before it was sent and kept popping the guide out which I fixed with a small screw in the shaft. Scar and Bitmans cars need a bit more truing of the rear wheels to take out some of the hop. Antony's car couldnt be run as the spur gear was touching the track in some spots. New tyres are on the way for that one. Can't understand why Manic's car wasn't quicker, I think it needs more track time to loosen up, as with Oldslots Camaro and HMCSAT's VW.

I also remeasured all the cars and found Terry's Audi while being exactly 70mm across the rear wheel arches, it flared out to 72.5mm across the front spoiler so with Terrys permission I shaved it back to regulation width. :aussie:

Overall though, now that I have slept on it, the cars are by and large very well prepared. And having so many differently setup cars to play with is just awesome.

If you can't wait for raceday, imagine how I feel!!!
cheers!

Steve

In case you were wondering, the running order was based on the order payment was received.....I already had a matrix set up for that....

When cars were running consistent high 6's I thought that was pretty right, the old lap record of 6.72 was set using a Ninco Mercedes with an inline NC5. This is also a reflection of my skill as a driver.

I fully expect much quicker times when the fast guys get on.

Oh and in turn 4 the cars disappear from sight at the overpass so there is a skill involved in driving blind until the car reappears just before the "s" bends.

Heavily influenced by the track in the movie "Spotswood"

TRhanks for the repair job buddy.
As can be seen it is a very small car and was hit by a very large piece of chip board whists moving my new track around in the man cave.

Actually expected it to be even slower than it was cos of the lightness snd smallness. The original car looked the part but handled like a dog

Congratulatiuons to everyone that is faster than me  this time around and condolences to those that were slower than me this time around  na na na na naa !

Looks spanking new! Nice track you've built for the series, Steve.

From the list of tracks, it looks like our cars have some serious 1:1 distance to cover before they get back to Gotterdammer-Ring. I'd like to pin all the tracks on Google Earth, where are they located? ... More importantly, if I ever plan an Australian vacation, I would have a pretty good idea which towns I absolutely MUST visit :D

Steve I can give you a lap time / weight ratio - will send to you later today. We have an open house today so busy cleaning. Am good also for Sunday 30th marshalling duties - my wedding anniversary that weekend so Sat night is out - or else it will be my last anniversary.

I've just divided the lap time by the car weight, so the lower the result the better. This formula has it's limitations, e.g. it treats weight as a penalty so if 2 cars post an identical lap times, the heaver car comes out in front due to the 'penalty' of the weight. This works for some tracks - if lighter cars dominate - but will be misleading on tracks where the handling due to weight placement will improve times rather than inhibit them.
