Well I've made a start on the new improved Southern Cross Motor Raceway!
The table measures 4.8m x 2m of 12mm MDF. This is my first time using a router!
Slots are 3mm x 7mm deep. Going with copper tape.
I don't know what the lane lengths are... but I reckon somewhere around 14-15m.
Back straight is 3.5m long, front straight 2.5m, bridge section 3.1m.
Surface will be Ferrodore Bridge Grey.

I made 2 mistakes with the routing, where the pin of the radius arm moved mid arc!!! Bugger!! I filled it with some putty, yet to repair it.

I haven't routed the bridge section yet, maybe this weekend... you can see the routing for the fences, they will be 3mm MDF 30 something mm high, enough for some signage.
Would like to have the lanes painted this weekend.
Here's some pics.

looks great Dick ,
will you get enough height under the bridge ?
it looks like it might be a steep incline/decline depending on direction of travel

sax

Thanks Matt. The rise for the bridge will start towards the end of the front straight, through the right hander and over the track, with a gradual drop before the right/left esses (3.1m between turn 1 and 2)

Nice one Knoath.

Remember the lazy way to paint slots, squirt paint into the slot, and push it along moving a strip of cardboard or something back and forth. Much easier than brushing.

I made up a Luf-style tape laying tool from some waste plexiglass I bought from a plastics engineering shop. It took me a couple of hours and saved more than that on my first lay, - 3 lanes and way smaller than yours. It also made the basic lay flatter than I could acheive by hand around the corners.

Some details on my track thread here in case you missed it. http://www.auslot.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=4911

Nice to see you've finally bitten the bullet- track looks great. There's going to be a nice selection of tracks for V32 to race on in the very near future!!

I know you love your scenery, are you gonna go crazy on this bad boy?

I don't think so Bry... I'll have the first corner rising to the bridge over the sweeper, but this will be the only elevation at this stage... I may do something like Davnic74 has done to add something to an otherwise flat table. Some trees and bushes, homemade grass etc, but buildings.... not at this stage.
This track will need to stand on it's side up against the garage wall, so weight is just as much an issue as elevations etc.

Well after work this arvo I got to work on the bridge section, I cut the board to allow the incline at turn 1, and also the aproach to turn 2.
I moved onto routing the bridge itself, got 1 1/2 lanes done when the router bit had had enough.... it was burning the wood, not cutting it.
So that was that!
Off to Bunnings to get a new bit tomorrow.
I may still be able to have the lanes painted by next week, and then Ferrodore.

Looks like good stuff Dick. You certainly seemed to pay attention during the time spent with Davnic!

Track also looks big - are you puttling it along the side-wall of the garage?

Cheers,

Steve

Yes Steve.. it will 'roll' on rounded legs a la Davnic 74's previous track (sorry, don't have any pics)... the legs will fold outward, rounded side down, and then be locked into place. Then it's a matter of 'rolling' the table down over the legs.
I may need to play with some counter balancing on the wall side of the table to assist in lifting it up, but I can lift the table off the floor and up against the wall on my own still, so I don't think It'll be too bad.
I reckon it weighs about 50-60kgs at the moment.

Should have seen when I tried to make beer & Daisy (the Kelpie) decided to help.. anyone else ever made beer that tastes of wet dog??

The layout is good and should have some fast racing. What did you do with the old track? Are you going to have two tracks to choose from now? smile.gif
