OK, If you haven't of gathered yet, I am planning to run a fun night, called the Scalextric Classic GP. This night is 2 fold.
  • To celebrate 50 years of Scalextric
  • A fun night where we race old slot cars that should be relegated to the glass cabinet
Now, the main race of the night will be the Scalextric Classic GP. I am still drawing up some rules/guidlines for the night, but to get you going (& on the search for some cars), I will outlined the basic rules here:
  • All Cars must be Scalextric, whether they are Tri-ang or Hornby (Is this correct, someone correct me)
  • All Cars are to be 70's F1 cars, originally produced in the 70's.
  • The cars must not have a separate chassis. Why? Scalextric produced a whole bunch of cars back then, with a body & all the running gear clipped up inside the body.
  • Cars must retain the original style of motor (Johnson 111's), original wheels, Original guide configuration & original Front axle setup (yes, the fronts must wobble around!!)
  • The idea is to keep things cheap. If you have a new MIB version, ths might not be the place to run it
Thats enough to get people started. I have been looking around Ebay & there is quite a lot that can be bought from the UK. I will also be on the look out for varients, so I will send out the occassional email stating what I have found. If we find certain sellers who will combine postage, we will do bulk orders (keep the cost down. I really would like the cars to be around $20 including postage for going concerns)

If (as per the other discussion) it is proving hard to find the original motor's, we may change this rule.

I will also announce other "Classic" scalextric theme's for the night. One will probably involve track cars

Cheers

Sounds good. Lets make it happen.

Re car purchase..... just an idea to float .... if you have a " contact" to purchase several cars then may be those that need a car/s could give you say $20 each to "pre pay" for said vehicles, then you could make a bulk purchase and any additional owing would be forwarded on to yourself, Hoffy.
Just a thought.

Obviously some guys are going to have their own complying vehicles which is fine.

Can we get some sort of collective purchase happening via Graeme so that most people in the club have a car to race (or at least share with someone else). If we do that I think we will save a lot of money and have a car so around 20 dollars. I also like the idea of a control tyre (Graeme's repro) so what are other peoples views on that?

CAN PEOPLE START A LIST OF WHAT THEY WANT/NEED ANDE SEND AN ORDER INTO GRAEME.

I'd like to put my order in for the Ferrari312 and bits and pieces (ie motors and gears) to get my two Shadows going. So thats 3 cars for hopefully under 60 dollars. I'll do a Peter Brock and cross enter myself in three different cars/teams. That way the worst I can do is come third last.

Patience Grass hopper Patience.

Yes we will do this. You do have first dibs on the Ferrari, OK <_<

Once I get some other crap sorted out, I will get this sorted out, with a full set of rules & an order to Graeme.

Took the little early model Ferrari for a spin on the track last night , figured the track was clean and I would get a good idea of how it goes. Put some plasticine up in the front and away it went . Straight line speed is good but the front wheels rub the body in the corners and it flips , the black tube on the front axle needs to be a bit wider so the axle cant move in towards the body as the car leans on the outside wheel (easy fix) One of the rear wheels is a bit buckled ( got any spares? ) I did notice that after only a few laps ( 5 - 10 ) the motor was very HOT . The rear axle runs free enough so theres no issue with the motor working against any drag there , Did these early motors run hot normally ?

I dismantled mine as you could barely turn the arm by hand it was so gunked up. With a jewellers screwdriver I cleaned out the segments on the comm as I was getting about a 1 ohm reading between segments. Thought the arm may have been a gonna. After the clean out each pole on the arm gave about 7 ohms. I assume thats a normal reading? I also used shellite (from Bunnings) to degunk everything. So perhaps youre getting a lot of current flowing into the motor because its partially shorted?

Ive run my brushes in on 6V for about 15 minutes and the motor has been stone cold. Of course thats under no load.

Steve and Hoffy how do GRT control tyres grip on your tracks?

SO, your saying Steve, that Friday the 23rd is no good?

I want to have as many involved as I can, so I can move the weeks back & forth as required.

Hoffy,

Dont need any parts. I ordered some bits and pieces from GRT a few weeks back. Where running slick tyres right?

Ive nearly got one car together, a white Shadow. Have bought a Qudos Ferrari but its running a Mabuchi with adaptor plate fitted so the Johnson motor should clip in no problems. Have ratted four motors and should be able to get two good working ones. So if someone doesnt have a car for the night I should have two up and running. If someone has a spare arm I could build up a third motor as one of the arms was cactus.

Is there going to be a concourse d' elegance? I bought some decals from Patto. Might do up the Ferrari so that it looks like a Ferrari if I have time.

We are going to be running grt's "reproduced" tyres, a control tyre as such, which are slicks, as per original. Hoffy will have a couple of extra sets available for purchase if required.

If you do have a spare car available can you bring it along. Blake is umming & arrring as to wheteher he will participate so therefore I am only buying one car from grt ( a black shadow, the same as my first ever scalextric car) for me to use.

Triggy,

I was going to paint the Ferrari but I might not bother as I might not get it finished in time. I will do my best to get it ready so I will have a spare car for Blake. Just need to change the mabuchi motor over for a Johnson. Am working on getting a second Johnson motor up and running. My brother was doing a clean out of his garage and found a box of old Scaly stuff dating back to when we were little kids (about 35 years ago!!) Had four Johnson motors in different states of repair. One sort of worked the other three were dead. I should be able to rat the motors and get two good working ones.

Thanks Rick. Don't bust your bearings just to get a spare car ready for Blake as I'm not sure yet whether he will be coming.
If it is ready, all well and good. If not no great dramas. I think Hoffy or the Crowes may have a spare car available anyway.
