Hi All

The OzRally Proxy series 10/11 circus has arrived at Norton Hill for Round Three. At this stage I am planning to run the stages over the weekend of 10-12 dec but if time permits I'll aim for this weekend coming.

The format will be a prologue of 5laps to give some indication of the cars performance on thursday evening then, stage one over 30 laps in clockwise direction on Friday night. Stage 2 will be run on either Saturday evening or sunday afternoon in the opposite direction.

Here's a pic of the track in the build process to give you an idea of it's layout. I'll post a more recent one shortly.

The track surface is Black board paint with copper tape. The voltage will be set at 12 volts using a WizardGM built electronic controller. The settings will be adjusted to suit each cars characteristics.

Here's the results of the prologue ran last night. I extended the length of the prologue to 10 laps to get a better feel for the cars. the running order was in Points table order after rnd 2

A number of them are tippy, this can be attributed to the narrow track and higher Cof G that some of the cars have. Some cars have not had the tyres glued onto the rims and I reckon that is the cause of the chattering reported on them.

Two cars, Manic's and the Dog's are jamming the guides in tight corners. they are fitted with the Ninco pro guides that are longer than a standard example. I can trim them back to the standard length if that is OK with the owners and Phil, please let me know via PM what you want done.

In general I think the standard of cars is quite good especially cars down the order, compared to last year.

I will use the Prologue result to seed the cars for stage 1. I will be running that tonight once it's cooled of a bit in the shed.

Ok. That's far enough. You can stop now and hand the cars on to the next track. :mosh:

There's a long way backwards to fall from there. You sure you didn't get my car mucking fuddled with one of the other blue Alpines?

Computers. They'll never catch on.

No trouble Lenny - I thought I'd dug out the shorter Ninco on it.. but then left it in the capable hands of the 14 yo so he might have picked up a long one. Slice away! :mosh:

Edit: nope casting nasturtiums at the boy - I put the short one on the Alpine & chucked him the wrong packet when we had to quickly build something else.

'...I had some troubles with this car which I think I have sorted...'

Interested in what that may have been Lenny, certainly you had a result in attaining a reasonable prologue time, after 3rd worst qual lap.!?!

I noticed also for some reason, there is a dislocation in the car numbering in the results, as opposed to the sticker # after car 20. Is this a slip due to ETWD running outside the points.?? ..slightly confusing when cars are referred to by # not entrant.

Hope the #23 A110 can stretch it's legs a bit once the running starts in ernest. :mosh:

Dont panic yet Em ,Its only the prologue. Things can only get better cant they :mosh: ??. The other is if it doesnt work on this track theres got to be one that it does. As long as its not the last one ;) . Track looks good Lenny . Noticed your running 12 volts, dont find it hard to run with the track being tight and twisty.Anyway have a good time and good luck those who end up at the pointy end.

Cheers Craig

Woah. Way not panicked. Extremely happy. And would like to stay happy. Hence the request to stop now. :mosh:

There is only downwards available from that, as has been witnessed before.

HI Chris

I've been having some contact issues with your car especially in tight corners that the elevation changes in. also there have been false readings on the lap counter (reading 5 sec. laps) that could relate back to the SCX guide and contact "tangs" design not making good contact. I changed the guide for one I have here fitted with SCX Pro braid and I also fitted a small styrene collet to the guide pivot pin to pull the guide up so the braid can make better contact with the "tangs". this seems to have addressed both the track contact and false lap time problems, we'll know for sure tonight. It tested OK today. I'm not having problems with the other scx cars entered with this set up though. ??

The car is also chattering badly as it goes around even in a straight line , which makes the car hard to drive I sanded the tyres slightly and radius the edges but it only improved it slightly. This is what is affecting the speed of the car. The time can be attributed to me driving cautiously and keeping it in the slot. some of the other cars slower times were because of multiple deslots.

All of these problems had made the car almost undrivable and would have been it hard to get a honest result for it.

The Number mix up is my mistake . I'll fix it for the stage

I hope this clarifies things for you

Alan

Hi Ya Red

so where's your conveyance then???

no probs with the 12 volts, it doesn't punish the lower powered cars as much as if it was lower. I can adjust the drivability of the cars with the settings on my controller and if I I need a bit more adjustment I use the digitial interface between the throttle and the grey matter ;)

Alan: My car is fitted with a Ninco Pro Guide BUT I think I trimmed the back off it a little, feel free to do the same to other cars,I think I did trim one of the other cars that caused a problem down here.

The prologue times must be wrong Stigs car should not be that fast!!!!

Well that is a sight for sore eyes. Think I was last in the first two rounds and the here the Healey is up the pointy end even if this is only a prologue!!.

Thanks for the feedback Alan. My intention after running the car last year was to make it "untippy" this time round and it seems I have succeeded. What a shame I didn't manage to give it some oomph as well.

Exactly where my thoughts are Rick. Though given Miveson's performance in the prologue, I might swap your order.

Good morning Proxy nuts

Here's the results for Stage 1 run last night.

ORPSrnd3stage1result.jpg

As I said above a surprise winner In Tom & Cam, when I was doing their run I knew it would be a good time as the car just hooked up on the track. It ran very smoothly and was very easy to drive resulting in less off's than the faster cars around it.

Other cars to improve was Triggy's A110. That car surprised me through out the run and just seemed to get better as it went on.

Phil's Torana was good too but the speed from the Scalex slimline caught me out a number of times, even after I had softened the settings on the controller.

the same applies for Slo1quicks Fiat the power seemed to come on suddenly and I was caught out going too fast at the end of the straight into the hair pin

356's 911 was quick but it took me some time to get used to it, hence the slower time than it should have had. Towards the end I gained some confidence in the car and it went quite well resulting in third fastest lap time for the stage.

Devious Dave's Talbot Lotus was a revelation, that car hooked up right from the start, not a rocket ship but lapped very easily and changed direction with no fuss on the switchbacks on the top of the hill section. It handles great considering the type of car it is -tall short and narrow.

Obsidth's Escort improved over the stage but would tip out on the odd occasion, once as it went into the tunnel which cost some time in recovering it.

It runs smoothly and hopefully it will go better in stage 2.

There was a few cars that fell well down the order from the prologue. Unfortunately Embers little Alpine was one. I just couldn't get a handle on that car last night. it was OK in the twisty bit over the hill but there were two corners that that kept tripping it up. it seemed as the grip levels increased the tyre would dig in and it would flick out of the slot on the quicker corners. The worst offender for tipping over easily was Slittlhales' Golf it seemed to just fall over every where which made it difficult to drive with any confidence. I think that also was because of the extra grip compare to the prologue run.

The other two cars notable for a drop down the order was Manic's and Tazracers. They were the opposite to Embers in that they had no grip at all. While they were not fast in the prologue they seemed to hang on OK and just stayed in the slot and rolled around with out fuss. I can't explain the dramatic drop off in performance, Taz's just struggled for grip everywhere. all I could do was dial back the speed and response dials on the controller and scrabble round for the stage. sorry guys :P

Munters Fiat still wanted to tip over a lot. I suspect that the rear ride height has a part to play there.

As mentioned in the prologue comments a couple of cars had floppy front axles which I believe affected the handling of some cars and made them tip out of the slot easily, ESP's and Smallnails Porkers were notable in this situation. You could see that ESP's car was tripping over the front axle due to it flopping around and jamming in the wheel arch. This was particularly noticable on the run up the back straight climb where the slot has a bit of a wiggle in it.

Nails car just has too much give in the front axle combined with the small diameter front wheels it just allows the car to tip past the point where the guide stays in the slot.

The last car on was the :dog: Lancia once the guide was trimmed it could complete a lap with out jamming in the tighter corners. I put the car on and it just rattled it way around at a nonchanlant pace and just stayed in the slot. It didn't so much accelerate but trundled up to it's top speed I thought it was taking for ever to complete the 30 laps but when I checked the time I had to double check the readout :P

As I'm doing every thing on my Pat Malone this weekend, if I have an off in an awkward spot to retrieve the car, it means unfortunately a hefty time penalty for that car. apologies for that but that's part of proxy racing I guess.

Also there hasn't been too many pics because yet. The good lady memsahib came out for a bit last night to check whether she could claim my super next week (not yet dear  ) and decided to take a few pics. I'll have a look in the camera later and see what she got. I'll see if I can get her come out again for tonight

Stage 2 will be run this evening in the opposite direction. The running order will be the reverse of the stage1 finishing order, the slowest cars running first. Results will be posted tomorrow some time so don't stay glued to the monitor all night tonight

Ok that's enough from me :P

Alan

Nice run down Lenny. Must be Nana nap time so you've got the strength for the next stage.

Congrats for stage win to Tom&Cam.

Well done to the winners - well impressed with my car, 6th on the Prologue and then 15th, just seems to be getting better and better as the stages go on. Was in the top 5-6 lap times which is very, very encouraging.

And I love that fact that Rick picks my car as the roughie, that's why roughies are roughies, they have very little chance of winning.

Thanks for running the round Lenny, looking foward to the next stage....

Mark
