John FPR7
Hi, I recently had a chat to Frank the managing editor of Model Art Magazine Australia about slot car content in Australian model magazines. He said the lack of slot car articles was mainly due to none being submitted to the magazine Frank suggested would like to run a slot car section in the magazine . I volunteered to get the ball rolling and help prepare articles. The magazine is a very high standard so I am interested in hand built slot cars or custom bodies that are well detailed. if you wish to submit your pride & joy for inclusion in the magazine send me a brief description and a few photos - just email size & quality for now. Please send the information to my email address listed below. If your car (or other vehicle) is what we are looking for I would then require a more detailed description. The photos for the magazine would have to be of high quality which may have to be arranged. I would prefer that the models had been used in some form of competition and not just a "shelf queen" This means some race marks will be acceptable. Some race history would be good. 1/64, 1/43,1/32 & 1/24th scales will be accepted. There will be some general slot car information as well maybe some "how to's" and track information in the articles. I hope this effort will generate more interest in our great hobby. The majority readers of the magazine are already model buffs so it is hoped the slot car articles may inspire them to motorize and race their models and join a race group. It will be appreciated if you can help by submitting your models for consideration. I may not get an article in every issue but I will try. That will depend on how many submissions I get. I can answer questions on this forum, via email or by phone. munter
I would have to say I dont see many scratchbuilders showing their work here....quite a few reliveried and rechassised cars though. I can't remember seeing a scratch built chassis car here at all.......but my memory is not that great......certainly not one that has competed in a competition though.... Somebody correct me on this please... Also the question of "what is a scratchbuilt car?" comes to mind. regards ps welcome to the forum, John Edited November 10, 2010 by munter Quote John Warren Slotcars are my preferred reality
kalbfellp
This is a scratchbuilt car, body from styrene sheet, chassis from brass sheet. Very few scratchbuilders here in Australia compared to overseas. Quote Phil https://www.hobartminiaturecarclub.com/ Email
eagleby flyer
Are there many clubs etc that run a class for scratch built cars? From what I can remember reading here is most times it is a set body style and maybe custom chassis. Although some of the 1970's aussie cars I've seen here are really very good. rick1776
What about the cars that Jazzbell built and painted for the enduro. They all looked better than good or is that not considered scratchbuilt? What about 1/24 vac bodies, might be able to get some CanAm cars? Is that considered scratchbuilt? slotbaker
Are there many clubs etc that run a class for scratch built cars? Apart from some proxy racing, the closest is probably the 1/24 scale Aussie Retro, that has scratchbuilt brass and/or piano wire chassis under over the counter vac formed bodies to build cars that replicate the pro racing cars in the USA from the 1960's. There are not too people in Asutralia like Phil, who scratch build bodies as well. There is scratchbuilding, and there is scratchbuilding. It's been discussed many times before, but I believe true scratchbuilding is where the total car is built from raw materials. Including; body, chassis, axles, motor, wheels, tyres, guide, braid, etc, etc. Who does that? Not many (if any) I suspect. The most common, and accepted (I believe) form of scratchbuilding is where the builder purchases raw materials and fabricates a complete chassis, then adds to it all of the other over the counter parts with maybe the exception of a vac formed or resin cast body that some are able to do. So, it's open to interpretation. Quote Steve K.
slotbaker
Re-reading the first post, and it doesn't talk about scratchbuilding. It talks about " hand built slot cars or custom bodies that are well detailed." etc. So, any non standard car would probably be suitable if it is well done, and/or with a bit of racing heritage to add a bit of interest. D3, Can Am, and FJ 1/24 classes would be the closest, but alas, here in Melbourne, only 3 or 4 guys that built/build their own chassis etc. the rest are kits that Peter Dimmers @ MR assembled :( Stu Quote Never wrestle with a pig...........you both get dirty........and the pig loves it. John FPR7
Hi Munter and the others in the discussion. First I am new to the forum format so I may take a while to get it right. I am asking for "hand built cars" . As was suggested that includes completely scratch built cars through to commercial chassis or parts of. A commercial chassis like a Scalextric Camero with a notch back hand molded Mustang with nice flared guards and hand painted to resemble the Ian "Pete' Geoghegan Mustang would be looked at. I have such a car but I bought it as finished. So I will be contacting the builder and see if he would like to feature it in the Model Art Magazine. I hope this example will demonstrate my criteria. Of course a completely scratch built car would be of great interest for an article. I am old enough to hold a seniors card & when I started in slot cars at about 10 years old the only serious racing was with scratch built cars both 1/32 & 1/24 so I have scratch built a few cars myself but mainly as race machines. So that is where my interest in "hand built cars' originated. If in doubt submit the car or body you have constructed or detailed and I will check out what will suit us for publication. LOOKING FORWARD TO YOUR SUBMISSIONS! cheers, John FPR7

Garry J
Hi All, I built these 4 chassis earlier this year for Jan Roestorf's opening race on his new track. Materials used are Carbon Fibre plate, brass and aluminium. Scale is 1/24th. We had a bunch of Brisbane, Gold Coast and Toowoomba drivers split into 4 teams for the days racing. The cars were a real community effort with contributions from - Werner from Ace Hobbies supplied FoxII motors and pinions Jan supplied axle ball races and the bodies Bodies were painted and detailed by Dave Newton I supplied the chassis Teams supplied their own wheels, tyres, axles, spur gear, braids and wheels inserts The teams had a couple of hours to set up their cars which worked very well and the racing was close and fast. The chassis were donated to the track and Jan plans to use them in other similar events. Everything you see here except the guides and screws was made by me. Dave did a fantastic job on the 2 x Porsche and 2 x Ferrari bodies - Cheers, Garry J Edited November 12, 2010 by Garry J Quote Cheers, Garry J Old age and treachery will overcome youth and skill
John FPR7
Hi Garry J , Great to see all these well engineered chassis & very neat bodies . How about sending me an email with some photos & tech details. I would suggest picking one of the cars & we will see if we can get an article in the Mag. Pauls Slots
Hi Garry, well done mate. Can you tell me where the bodies are from, are the hard kit type or are they vac formed ? Nice chasis also, shows it can be done. Paul Quote Try Harder, if you dont fail your not trying hard enough
Garry J
John, I don't have the cars, Jan has them so I'm not sure what the situation is with them. I'm a bit busy building a track for some guys in Brisbane at the moment but I have plans for some more one off creations in the near future. I'll post details when it happens. Paul, The bodies are 15 thou lexan made by Andrew Bartholomew here in Brisbane. Andrew has a pretty good range of CanAm, Group C and early sports bodies like these in both 1/24th and 1/32nd scale. They're available from the usual places such as Ace Hobbies and Hornsby Slot Cars.
