I'm asking if the Carrera power transformer[14.8] would/could do any damage to a scaletric or hornby 12volt motor, I have both options of power and am wondering which to permantly use for a variety of make of cars/motors.

I doubt any of the Later 'Can' style motors would experience any Real difficulty at 14.8 volts.

I'd be a bit more 'Warey' with some of the Older/very old style cars/motors,..as I may be wrong, but I think some of the Early motors were in Fact Probably actually 6 volt motors and the Wire guage may be a bit Thin.

That said,..None of them Will just 'Blow Up' instantly at that Voltage.

Give them a short run and Check the Motor Temperature,..If it's Too much, it WILL Heat up !!!

Just be careful,..the Modern motors Should cope Without any Problems,..Mind you ,..Driving them at that Voltage Might be Another story altogether !!!

Personally, on Smaller tracks, I find running them at say 10.5 Volts,..Makes for Great Racing !!

What has happened is I purchased a cheap track set [Jaida], which came with long can motors simular to old SCX [as I've read]. In process of designing track & hooking up power I tried 14.8 volts on these and 1 car went "pooth", very quikly. I wasn't keen to try any of my better collection. Was unsure if it was due to,, cheap quality,, or bad luck,, or a definate no, no.
cheers

I'd suggest it was just cheap quality or bad luck on that one Neil.

Standard Scaley Sport power packs are listed as 16v. SCX is 14.6v.

While the power packs are marked 14.8 volts the output voltage will probably drop once they are put under any sort of load as they are not regulated.

I'm guessing/hoping it was just cheap qual. after the info received, I'm gonna run the 12v for now & then the 14.8v which was always going to be through diods for non magnet or maybe I should just stick to the 12v. as I have 2 of these transformers & only one 14.8v. from a Carrera Go set

Oooh!

When you say 'Transformers', is that Exactly what you mean?
Or did you use the term 'loosely'.

If the cars aren't being run from a Rectified 'Power supply' as such,..there May be some 'Issues'.

One can often 'see' some Strange Outputs from Transformers, depending on Quality etc.

I think some people have had too high a voltage attached to the electrodes on their head :P
sorry guys, this comment was intended for the idiot that was on at lunch today but has since been removed.
