Rob
Seem's to be a wide recess with about 2 mm from braid to slot. Which width of braid did you buy Dave? 3/16" 4.76mm or 1/4" 6.35mm If the router bit is the same as mine its for the 1/4" width braid. Maybe i need the 4 mm bit? Edited January 9, 2009 by Davnic74 Quote Regard's David Team Phoenix 4 x Australian National Champion. Premier Raceway Build Gallery Raceway Build. kalbfellp
My track is routed with a 4mm bit. But my recess cutter is home made, so it fits. Quote Phil https://www.hobartminiaturecarclub.com/ Email
SlotsNZ
1/8th inch is 3.18mm I routed at 3.2mm, with one of those bits, and it was an "easy" but not sloppy fit, which is what you want. That bit has done quite a few hundred feet of track around our club now........it is "tired" ......it lived a full and meaningful life... Not sure how far you got, but you COULD turn the pin down in a lathe to fit your 3.05mm slot. Re-routing is a pig, even with a good bog. You don't want a sloppy fit on your bit though, don't re-route to 3.5 or 4mm. The pin guide will be too loose, and it will wander around a bit especially as yu turn corners, and make a zigzaggy mess. (okay on the straights, as the router mostly "forces it left") Alternately, if you don't want to do that, you could get another bit with a 2.95mm guide pin from that other source I mentioned to you. If you decide to keep the 3/16th braid, just get a bit with 2.95mm guide pin, and 16mm side cut (5/8th) instead of 19mm (3/4 inch) and you won't need to fix anything. Davnic74
Thank you for the advice fella's ,the easiest way around this issue will be to turn the recess bit down a little more and not re-route also i spoke to Peter at MR and i can swap over the braid to 1/4. Excellent, that should solve all the problems. Braid is worth the extra time on build. You save it many times over in maintenance, let alone frustration, power delivery issues etc. Quote Recovering Lapsed Slot Addict * Custodian of many used screws (mostly loose ) * Total kidder * Companion of other delusional slot addicts
Davnic74
Seem's that my problem has been a shrinking 1/8 router bit! Is this possible? After some mod's on the recess bit it fit's most section's but not the last few area's i have had to re-route..then the smoke started on a test piece. SlotsNZ
Seem's that my problem has been a shrinking 1/8 router bit! Is this possible? After some mod's on the recess bit it fit's most section's but not the last few area's i have had to re-route..then the smoke started on a test piece. Looking at the "fluffing" on the sides of the slot, it looks to me like that bit is blunt. Which in turn makes me think it isn't/wasn't a very hard steel. Smoke indicates that the heat buildup due to having to "force" the router forward, again, makes me think the bit is blunt. I smoked a few cheap router bits doing woodwork a few years back, and swore off them to better quality. Does the tip of the bit look discoloured? Davnic74
Was working fine then it just started smoking when i tested it on some scrap, i only tested it because i noticed the slot width was smaller. the bit was around $30 used to finish the last track. knoath
Carbi-tool 1/8in bit I bought for $34. If it's one of these I'd be surprised if it was blunt after that much routing Dave. Davnic74
@ Oldslot, the bit was definatly a different size, i did a test on scrap and measured them side by side. @ Dick, it was a carbitool bit, and the second bit i purchased friday started to discolour after 2 small straights were routed...so i'm taking it back, $39.94. @ Syd, the only router bit's in the shop were 1/8 and the next size up was 4 mm. Well finally some positive progress today, next setting the elevation's correct, filling, then paint.
