waytofast
hi gents. started building my 6 lane MDF track last sunday. then visitors arrived and stayed for 3 days. that put a halt to the track work. got back into it yesterday. this heat is killing me. 38 degrees, god knows what the temp was in my metal garage. stopped work at 6pm and started drinking some cold beers. got my radiuses finished, the elbow and cut my straights, ready to be routed 2morrow. more pics in a couple of days. should have my 19mm bit arrive from slotsnz early in the week. will measure my lane lenghts and order the magnabraid from MR asap. cheers, steve

SlotsNZ
here ya go A couple of tips 1) install the aircon BEFORE ya start the track 2) start the cold ones AS you start working - for pleasure, and because helps introduce "new and interesting curvature adventures" into the router meanderings but seriously, very tidy router work there Steve Edited January 31, 2009 by SlotsNZ Quote Recovering Lapsed Slot Addict * Custodian of many used screws (mostly loose ) * Total kidder * Companion of other delusional slot addicts

waytofast
latest progress pics taken yesterday. had about 10 feet of track to router and the router bit went blunt on me. otherwise it would have all been finished and ready to recess for the magnabraid. using a straight edge for the router to follow, simple but foolproof. straight is finished. flyover screwed into place. can be removed for recess routing, laying braid and painting. geez i hope these pics upload!!! bought ferrodore today. $75 for 4 litres and a new router bit. what are your thoughts on painting sequence, slots then track then lay magnabraid. brush or roller for ferrodore?? cheers, steve
Rob
what are your thoughts on painting sequence, slots then track then lay magnabraid.brush or roller for ferrodore?? cheers, steve Looks good Steve, I think youre sequence is right Undercoat/Sealer for MDF (both sides of the boards) paint the slots, mask slots to avoid ferrodore in the recess or slot then paint the ferrodore. Brushing or rolling all depends on personal preferance. I rolled mine with a high density foam roller and find it too abrasive on the tires. Great if you want a tire truer built into the track but terrible for tire life. Im planning on repainting mine some time this year with a brush in the direction of the flow of the track. I stired the ferrodore tin very vigourously before painting which obviously ensured that all the particles were suspended in the paint. waytofast
finished routing the main slots yesterday. the recess bit arrived from slotsnz and magnabraid should be here by friday. i wont recess until i have the braid to make sure depth will be correct. in the meantime i will be attaching adjustable legs to the track. i bought the builders bog. (recommended) and havent had to use any. says alot about planning and patience. which i usually have none. holes cut for the magnabraid to through on the joins. section of straight removed for legs to be attached. entire straight removed for legs. the elbow's legs will be next, then i can work the radiuses into place. cheers, steve
Yngwie
Thats looking fantastic waytofast. Are you envisaging that the track will be taken apart often or is that a precautionary measure? I like the idea of having the track with the adjustable legs. Looks "neat"
waytofast
i have made the track in such a way that it will be easy to dismantle when the need arises. it will break down into 6 sections. easy to transport to shopping centres etc.

waytofast
working in 39 degree heat is a killer. anyway, attached the remaining legs. used what ever i could find to hold track at the right height. all legs finally done. from a different angle. full view. will route the recess tomorrow. and have a long hard think about wheather to use contact glue or double sided tape for the braid. im off to have some icy cold beers. cheers, steve

waytofast
here are some updaed pics. lane colours have been painted using water based paint. i did a sample with spray enamel, but it reacted with the ferrodore. got sick of waiting for the 3M tape (still waiting) so i used selleys quick grip. very easy to run a bead of glue in the recess, using a sauce bottle as recommended by some members. excellent advice. laid one side of each lane. one section complete. 5 more sections to go. starting to look like a track now. will post more progress pics in a couple of days. waytofast
finally finished the 6 laner today at 4pm. had 9 club members come at 7pm to test it out. everybody liked it. the carnage surprised me. they were all like young kids. its the only 6 laner in canberra. will play on it for a week then pull it down in its 6 sections. then start another 6 laner. different design. im hoping to open canberra's only slot shop by late april. picture of entire track. 13.5 metre track lengths. used polycarbonate for borders. view from the other end. close up of cars on the track. i would like to thanks all the auslot members that gave advice during the building process. slotsnz (mark) for supplying the recess bit. (it worked beautifully) i learnt alot during this project that i can apply to my next track. cheers, steve
