2007/2008 Rally Oz Proxy Race

Recommended Posts

Here's an idea.....

Proxy race for WRC and JWRC rally cars, as raced from 2000 onwards, as made by Ninco, Scalextric, SCX, AutoArt, Carrera etc, to be run on single or two lane tracks by auslot members one car at a time against the clock.

Types of cars would be (just off the top of the head.....) Subaru WRX, Mitsi Lancer, Peugeot 206 and 307, Hyundai Accent, Toyota Corrolla, Seat Cordoba, Skoda Octavia or Fabia, Ford Focus, Renault Clio, Citreon Xsara, C4, C2, Saxo, Fiat Punto, VW Golf, Suzuki Swift... there will be others, just ask if you have something different in mind. 2wd or 4wd doesn't matter just one class.

Plastic chassised and bodied cars in RTR form with improvements. (Same concept as other DUPR proxy races in 06 and 07)

Non magnet.

Motors, weight, wheels and gearing open.

Tyres rubber only.

Tracks can be wood or plastic BUT should be tracks that are not used for a round of the DUPR in the past or in the future. This event is for all of the other track owners.

No of rounds to be confirmed, limited to 8. Races to be run over spring / summer and not to interfere with or overlap the DUPR in 08.

I think it should be fairly easy to run the rounds as you only need one driver per round and we can all find that ! No need for orgainising groupd etc.

Each round could be run over a few nights, for example with my round I plan on having it run in three parts, some Friday night, some Sat arvo and some Sun arvo. 2 stages per day, one in each direction over varying laps, say 6 laps on Fri, 9 on Sat and 12 on Sunday. Reports to be posted on auslot after each couple of cars.

Spitenza (Lav), Casula Raceway (Gazza) and Minto Park (teamredracing) and SanPhoeno (phoneo29) I would hope and expect to be 4 of the tracks used.

Points to be as per WRC 10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.

Anyone interested ????

I think this one is an excellent idea...maybe a chance for those out there who dont have a multi (read "larger then 2) lane circuit to trial something different.

I do have a thought for the regs tho...no lowering of the bodies...rally cars have high ground clearance. Be a bit of a challange to get them to run right. Just a thought

I'm very keen even though I don't have a single rally car, getting some new cars is always a problem I like to fix.

Spring / Summer....when exactly are you thinking of running this phoeno? (ie how long do I have to get some cars? Fly make some VERY nice rally slots :))

I would be very keen to host a round, tarmac of course! :)

Haven't you seen a tarmac spec rally car, hoffy?

I would certainly be interested in entering a car and hosting a round on my 2 lane routed "tarmac" track ( Warwick Grove Raceway in South Aust ) 10 corners to give it that "rally" feel.

Manic,

Fly don't make rally cars from year 2000 and onwards.

Do you or will you have borders on your track in a few months time ? Non mag cars on slippery plastic surfaces like scaley sport and carrera would definately need borders.

No time frame set, was just a post to get a feel for any interest. Would be end of spring thou, maybe a mid Nov start.

Oh, looks like setup cost will be much cheaper than estimated then. :)

My track now has borders, (thank you Mr Hooker :)) and where it doesn't it has barriers.

If you're not too keen on tarmac stages, (understandable) hmcsat has a Ninco rally track with a Ninco dune - Quite cool!

Phoeno , like the idea. Gazza and I were mullin it around sometime ago.As you know we already run a couple of proxy cars when guys can't turn up for our meets. Problem is that I'm rebuilding my track next year as the poor old girl is starting to show some wear and tear (not the mssus) :) .I know there is'nt to many purpose built rally tracks and there are tarmac stages but would like to keep the amount of road tracks down as we may lose the sight that it is a proxy rally race. Thats my view anyway and its about time that those guys who like there rally racing had a proxy event. By the way pheono don't forget we can also run night stages, there good just ask the guys who have run them over here and at Gazzas place.

Cheers Craig

Craig,

If you were the first round in Nov this year, would that solve the problem ?

What do you mean by road tracks and keeping the numbers down ? What other sorts of rally tracks are there ?

I know you guys run your night stages but not all cars come with lights or people might not want/need to install lights.

Lets see how many tracks we get, if we get more than needed, we might have a vote, and if we do we can vote on night stages too.

Hi Pheono .The night stages were just a sideline (tongue in cheek thing). November is out this year as I'm away up the North coast for hols for three weeks .Even racing here is out for me in November. Thought you were talking about new year.

How many tracks do you run for a proxy round as this is new for me. As far as the road tracks I was only sugesting that there be more runs on routed single lane or 2 lane rally tracks (Ninco ) ,Then run tarmac stages in between .

Gazza and I have been running single lane routed rally tracks for so long now I forget about the rally sets you can buy.

Cheers Craig

Any time is fine with me ..... i don't have a life

As far as running with lights, it was just a novelty thing we added this year to add a bit of variety

QUOTE lenny broke

I do have a thought for the regs thou...no lowering of the bodies...rally cars have high ground clearance. Be a bit of a challenge to get them to run right. Just a though

Well i'd let them get the cars as low as they like, they will only perform on plastic anyway which just means they are just another road car!

If you enter a car ........ is that the car that runs on every track?

Unlike most other "Rally" tracks, Craigs and My track were built rally specific, meaning that they are tight, twisting, plenty of hills ,dips, and negative camber corners with a few jumps and bridges just to keep you on your toes, the rougher the better ........ no fixing up or re-routing any sections when we built them, And with 40 odd mtrs of track it's hard to get into any rhythm which demands your full attention.

If your going to run plastic or wood road tracks, just limit them to only one lane .... inside

The problem with plastic or routed road track is that it just turns into a speed thing, You can run a slot-it McLaren chassis with a Mitsubishi body on it and that would be legal, great for that situation but it would be lucky to get a quarter of the way around our tracks.

What voltage is going to be used ........ we both run variable power ,but set at 13.8 on the rally tracks.

Have to find out from Lav how long before his track is up and running.

November is out this year as I'm away up the North coast for hols for three weeks

How about December, would be a good way to send out the old track ? Maybe Gazza could open the event in late Nov, you second and have Lav finish it as his first event on his new track in Feb.

How many tracks do you run for a proxy round as this is new for me.

1 track = 1 round. Not sure how many rounds we will have, depends on number of tracks offered. How many stages you run is up to you but I expect/ would like each car to get 8 mins on average per round. I'll leave it up to track owners as to how many stages/laps they want to do for their leg of the proxy.

Unlike most other "Rally" tracks, Craigs and My track were built rally specific,

I agree, just dedicated rally tracks would be ideal, lets see how many tracks we get offered to use before we go deciding on tracks.

You can run a slot-it McLaren chassis with a Mitsubishi body on it and that would be legal,

It certainly would not be legal. Chassis and body must be from the same car.

What voltage is going to be used

What ever you normally run.

Holy Shoot ! I've only just seen this,

Ok - ive told the wife this weekend is my time on the track, i'll be yanking it outta the shed (ie cut in half) as i gotta get to the back and sides, but the shell of the track wont be long off... It should be landscaped by Xmas ... as ive got the majority of things already.

As for cars 4WD only ??? as i know with garry's and craigs track 2WD is a $h!t to drive with ... im only new to this proxy thing (try to enter in DUPR as well) so wouldnt say i know much about "tuning" the car but suppose there is also a lot of guys here that only use Slotits and speedsters too .... so i see fairness to all, weight and close to box as possible.

There's my 2c

2wd, 4wd fwd any thing you like is ok but I wouldn't expect many non 4wd entries.

If you go last Lav, you have more time to build your track and the original boxes that the cars were sent in and are to be returned in will be nearby at Gazza's.

With many people from Sydney who already rally at Casula and Minto Pk, I thought it made sense to start there.

What about 70s 2wd escorts or Fiat Spyders? I'm not that into modern 4wd cars.

I've been experimenting with making single lane track loops out of plywood that adapt to my scaley classic plastic track. One loop is laminate (ice like surface) the other rough grainy timber with added bumps. So combined with the hairpins of my Monacoesque 2 lane track, a good variety of one lane stages can be made. I'll post details of this track in a week or so. I've also finished my led/ldr trigger gantry that starts and stops the stop watch to remove human error in timing.

One problem with my track would be Ninco cars, if their guide is deeper than the Scalextric classic slot depth.

Consider me interested.

Not having run plastic for years, That could be another problem as you are limited to only one make on some plastic tracks!

Nothing happening here Gazza. Maybe anyone planning on running classic track in this, can the test a ninco rally car to see if there are issues with guides ? if there are perhaps we have an issue that might rule out classic tracks. Holty can I leave this to you ?

Perhaps we need a show of hands from those entering a car or considering entering a car. And from those who want to be considered for hosting a round.

Lets see how many of each we get and then some decisions and dates can be set.
