Super glue removal

Recommended Posts

So the tyres on my nsr moslers are years old and I need to change them, but they were super glued on years ago and I can’t get them (all, got most) off. Any tips to get it all off and start with clean slate? Acetone soak or similar? Thanks

Welcome back gref, well done on escaping the prison state.

Yes, an acetone soak works well on alloy rims, haven't tried it on plastic rims though.

Thanks Chris, yes I’m pretty happy to not be there at the moment. I’ve got them soaking so not sure how long it will take but gotta be better than they are now. You guys still racing? I haven’t raced for 10 years!

I mount both plastic and alloy rims on a lathe, and use the sharp end of a blase screwdriver to get the majority off, then a sharp blade held sideways against any remaining protrusions, to finish.
It does create a bit of alumimium or plastic dust, but hey - why use a screwdriver when you can use a sledgehammer ........ :)

I've never timed how long it takes but leaving it overnight leaves the rims shiny and clean and ready to re-use.

Has it really been 10 years since we raced, I still race with Mark and Greg in the Phoenix group, we even got some racing in this year until lockdown 5 shut everything down.

Rip the majority of the rubber off with a pair of pliers then drop the wheels in a jar of thinners for 24 hours then just clean up with a wire brush.
