knoath
I have just come back to slot cars after about a decade and I'm building my 3rd routed track. This time a 2 laner as it's really only family having some fun, mostly myself and my oldest, now 18. So on to the build... Measuring approx 5.4m X 2.2m (almost 18' X 7') I'm not sure of lane lengths. Lane spacing varies. Scenery work and scratch built buildings. The table is built on castors for ease of movement so I can work from all sides. I used 3mm MDF around the edge to get an idea of the shape of the edging. Then I used cardboard sheets to get an idea of the height of the edging. Thumb tacks used to pin it to the frame. Once happy, I used 6mm MDF for the edging, but around the tighter curves I used 2 layers of 3mm. I had used plaster to form the scenery base, but I really don't like using it so I sourced some Sculptit from Officeworks for the more detailed top layer which is much better to work with. To form the base layer I used cheap 'CHUX type cloths, cut into strips, soaked in plaster then layed on to flyscreen which I stapled to the track edge. Playing around with 3mm ripple strips. we have run a few laps with them just placed on the track to see where they might interfere with the cars. knoath
I masked the edging ready for the mess of painting and adding grass to the terrain. Lowndes approaches Skyline... These catch fences are just in situ... just seeing how they look. More concrete fencing to go in, I'm waiting for more sculptit to become available to continue with scenery. knoath
Thanks Fellas. Bry, we moved 4 years ago and during the move the cars and power supply were stored in a shed. My son saw them and said it was a waste to have them in boxes so that planted a seed! I have a 9x8m garage so room wasn't an issue! The surface is just some grey misstint from Bunnings, then a misting of matt black and ivory white spray cans... I quite like it.... and it doesn't smell like Ferradore! knoath
Having run some laps, I'm finding the grip is nothing like the Ferrodore of old... however, I am running cars as they were when they were put away around 8 years ago, maybe longer. I managed to true the tyres a bit more on a Ninco Mosler and that has helped a lot, so it looks like I'll be going through my stock of MJK's and slowly working through my cars, glueing and truing. Looking to add timing as soon as I can find a suitable, cheap PC. Quote Cheers, Dick SCMR build thread Woodbrook Valley build thread "A Man's home is his castle, but his garage is his sanctuary!" SlotsNZ
For many here who may not know. When I got into modern slots at the end of 2006, I found SCI first, then a month later Auslot forum. I was in steep learning curve mode, as we founded the Hawkes Bay club. I took a few trips to Oz, going to Sydney to meet the Australian Ninco/Fly/various brands distributor who helped us get started with our first track - 100 foot Ninco, meet some good guys in Sydney like Tooter who took me to a private racing group in North Sydney, met Cathy at Armchair, - Jim was away in hospital, met Roland at SlotShop Sydney, where I have raced a few times on the old Artin track, and in Melbourne (point of epistle), hooked into the V32 group, and some other guys who raced at Geds. So it is great seeing some of that old crew back here on forum again, as I have sweet memories of being trotted around Melbourne by the Scrivvies, Stubbo, Eno et all in 2007 and 2008. So any contribution I make here, we have V32 guys in particular to thank for help, inspiration etc. Knoath's was the nicest scenic track I visited. I have raced on Knoaths old track, and those of a few other tracks of the original V32 club guys who are on here. Stayed on occasion with Eno at Dandenong, who also took me to meet Peter at MRSlotCar, and stayed with Stubbo out by Phillip Island when he and Eno hosted me for a weekend of Historics racing. knoath
Aw, shucks mate, kind words... Thank You. I have a miniscule amount of knowledge of slot cars and racing (just go through the V32 results pages ) but what I did learn when I entered the hobby was that there are some awesome people involved who would (and did for me) go well out of their way to welcome and encourage newbies. It's one of the reasons why I came back... good times, better people. But you all know that. shodan
Starting to fill out nicely. Have you moved some of the raised ripples away from the track edges? What's your plans for lighting, what kind of vibe are you going for?
knoath
Only 1 ripple strip is glued down, last corner... although if you're travelling too slowly you will ride up on it. The others, if left in place, will be in the way, so I will paint some on the track surface as I had done already and I may sit the MDF ones behind the painted strips... sort of as if they have an apron. Still seeing how different cars behave through different corners. Lighting? Still working through it. I am about to start on some banner lighting, using warm white LEDs, but the street lights as above are cool white. The pits, I'm leaning to warm white and the Race Control building will be cool white. This should break things up a bit and add a point of difference to the look of it. Like you, I wouldn't mind more cars with lighting kits! Quote Cheers, Dick SCMR build thread Woodbrook Valley build thread "A Man's home is his castle, but his garage is his sanctuary!" knoath
I bought a Magnetic Racing building for my layout, absolutely love this kit! Accurate, sturdy, well designed!I have painted mine and this really adds to the time it takes to put together, but it really is worth it!I have had to add a few things like walls and windows to the lower level and I've also added glazing to the windows. Building the stairs, I will shorten one set and add a return/platform to get the height correct. Also adding some lighting to the main straight...
