mattcrackers
After some help please. I have a 3D Printed body wich has the usual lines from the printer. What I would like to know is what have people used to fill the body to have a smooth finish? I was thinking of priming the body, sanding, priming etc until I have built it up enough to have a smooth surface. Is there a better/alternative way of doing this. I was thinking also of using some type of filler but afraid I might lose some of the cars lines. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks Matt
ZeGas
Hi Matt, I use a casting resin I picked up from bunnings, it gives the print additional strength as well. From this To this, I thought I had a better pic though this wasn't the finished resin product to this I have also tried two cans of spray, one a clear polyurethane, the other a colour of your choice (Rust-oleum works really well). Spray with clear then with colour immediately, three lightish coats 15 mins apart. This was using the above technique. Edited February 10, 2020 by ZeGas Quote Cheers Grant . mattcrackers
Cheers Grant. After a bit of searching I'm thinking of trying the Rustoleum filler/primer. Sanding down between coats, so as to keep the detail on the car. Might take some time but I'd eventually like to make a silicon mould to produce a lighter weight resin body. Here's the car, sitting on one of your chassis's atm, as you can see it needs a little work. Not that I haven't got anything to do on my workbench at the moment either, just another project. cheers Matt
ZeGas
I was going to try that myself but could only find it online so forgot about it. Let us know how it goes. BTW that car's sitting really nice. Quote Cheers Grant . mattcrackers
Finally found some Rustoleum Primer/filler and managed to apply a few coats to the Nissan. Here it is after the first coat, as you can see the print lines stand out quite a bit. And how it is at the moment after the 4th coat of the filler primer. I've been sanding down between coats back to the high spots on the plastic print material so as not to lose to much detail. Still quite a bit of work to do before I can make a mold, but it's getting there slowly. cheers Matt
Shaynus
That's looking great Matt. A lot of elbow grease to get it to that point
Wobble
Very nice finish. Been wondering how to go about this with a 3d body but everything has closed down around here so it'll have to wait.
imugford
lowering your layer level will reduce the print lines but will increase the print time. ive been printing @ .05 with good results. ZeGas
I've found it also make it more susceptible to splitting as there are more join lines. I used to print with 0.2 nozzle and .05mm layers but have reverted to 0.4 nozzle and 0.1 layers as it is producing a stronger finished product. Although there is a small loss of detail I think it is acceptable. Quote Cheers Grant . mattcrackers
Don't know anything about 3D printers to be honest as I've never used one. This was given to me by a mate who asked if I could do anything with it. Hoping to have it ready for molding soon so I can make a resin copy and see how it comes out/what needs to be changed/fixed. Don't think it will lose much detail especially when the decals have the door lines etc.
ZeGas
Matt, please do a how to for the resin cast when you get to it. Materials suppliers as well as process if you wouldn't mind. I'd love to have a go one day but honestly haven't a clue where to start. Quote Cheers Grant . mattcrackers
Hi Grant, Will do, hopefully the Nissan is ready sooner than later. Still trying to find a wing that suits the Nissan. I'm working on a few projects at once with all the time on my hands atm, Even stuffed up a lovely paint job, lol.
Shaynus
Is the wing that was on in no good? If you aren't in a hurry, I could try 3d printing one for you to use in a mould? Would probably need some rough measurements. It wouldn't be trainspotting accurate though
mattcrackers
Hi Shaynus, No mate the wing was pretty flimsy so won't be using it. Thanks for the offer, I do have a wing that I intend to modify/use but if I get stuck I'll let you know. cheers Matt
mattcrackers
I have made a little bit more progress wit the Nissan. Here's how I did it, rookie resin at work. I have sanded the body with wet and dry to get a smooth finish. The pic below shows the body filled with clay, trimmed and ready for the mold. For the mold box I use Lego, a bit of blu-tac for the seal and some scrap laminate. Here's the box before being turned. Here's the box sealed down with the blu-tac, car in position ready for the silicon. I've used Pinksil Silicon to make the mold, 50/50 mix of part A & B, poured slowly into the one corner. The air bubbles all came to the top and will not affect the mold...hopefully. Gave it a couple of hours and then removed all the lego, and removed it from the laminate base. I'll give it a quick trim and pour some resin tis afternoon and see how it comes up. cheers Matt
Shaynus
Great idea to use the Lego to make the mold box! Do you get the silicon ingredients locally or on line?
mattcrackers
Yeah mate I can get them 2 mins from home in O'Connor. I looked all over Perth and they were under my nose so to speak. I've made a couple of resin bodies, black and white/beige but flickr is playing up atm so can't get them up. Might have to talk to you about the wings Shaynus as what I was hoping to use isn't really correct
Shaynus
No drama Matt. Similar style to what was on the originally printed body, or something a bit more generic, boot mounted style?
mattcrackers
Pretty sure there were a few different styles. The one that was printed with the car was flimsy so would need to be 'beefed up' so to speak. I actually like the boot mounted style which was what I thought I may have had something similar which could of been modified. I've got some pics on my phone which I'll upload soon. cheers Matt
mattcrackers
This is the type of wing I like. Not the best picture but you get the idea. Supports would have to be solid but I think it would last longer on the race track than the original, although I wouldn't mind doing both. mattcrackers
Here's a couple resin bodies I've knocked out. One is Procast standard 'beige' and the other with some black colourant. No door lines but I'll be using Pattos decals and have found that you really don't need the lines anyway. Knowing that they come up reasonably well I think I might have to get some other cars printed that are currently unavailable. cheers Matt
Shaynus
I can have a crack at the type of wing you like. That type is what I prefer too, as it is easier to print. Fingers crossed I may get a go at it over the weekend. Your bodies have turned out great! Will be good to see some different cars to mix it up with the Commodore and Mustangs! I assume you will be allowed to race this at Syd's? Well done!
ZeGas
Matt, Excuse my ignorance on this, is the resin quite stiff that you can mold to the walls, like finger painting? Next time you do one could you take a bit of a video or stepped photos please. Quote Cheers Grant . What do you think about the shape? Too high / too far back / too narrow, etc? Any feed back is welcomed (just try to look past the quality of the actual print - it was a quick try & see!)
