I was going to build a routed digital track but I have to keep reminding myself that there are no slot car racers in my town!!!

Digital could have helped a bit in this respect: with a software like RCS64 you could have had 2 pacer cars to race against.
If you had used magnabraid in your routed track, adding magnets to the pace cars would have made them very hard opponents to beat.
At our digital club there are 5 of us that race regularly. Even though the track has equal lane length, there is one preferred/fastest lane.
Which means that we almost never change in the other lane.
However, in our latest series we have added a pacecar on the preferred lane: now we are forced to change lane every so often and this makes things even more interesting...not to mention that the pacecar is pretty hard to overtake which increase the challenge! ;-)

To make it more of a challenge put fuel on, So you have to overtake the pace car then pit to refuel, and do it all over again. Makes you keep pushing all the time. Just a thought...
