Any advice to a Canadian who hasn’t been to Australia before? I would be interested in some sight seeing and I might be able to squeeze in some slot related stops also. SlotsNZ Posted October 8, 2018 Report Share Posted October 8, 2018 The locals can probably give more specific advice, but as a several times visitor for a tourist perspective - Wandering the downtown area from the old Victoria Markets to Chinatown is still fun. There are some nice small arcades with specialty shops in all things, and many have nice semi-outdoor cafes in them. Lygon/Lydon? street is always interesting (Italian area) Across the river in the Casino and restaurant district very nice wandering and eating. There are tourist boats that do short trips up and down the river and some interesting stop-offs. The trams are fun to use as hop on/off - and the short trip out to the Vietnamese area is worth a tasty lunch, some parks and gardens between there and downtown Check out any concerts at the big sports venues. There used to be a tram you can have dinner on as it trundles around the city - you would need to book well ahead. The aquarium was quite good. The prison museum where Ned Kelly got his neck stretch was interesting. A trip to Ged's [Mannimal is it still the same?] is worthwhile for a slot cave par extraordinaire (nearest thing Oz would have to Lufs' but more stuff, and then more); and if you have time to go out to Dandenong, the locals can tell you if it is worth going to Pete's these days. Don't forget your earplugs........... If you have time to get out of town - there's a lot of grapes being rotted down in barrels up the Yarra valley. nice output. - And just remember, they have two kinds of wildlife in Australia - the kind that want to eat you, and the kind that just wants to poison you. Then there's the wombats, I like the wombats ... wombats are rather cool if you get a chance to go to a zoo. I mean really, - how many animals do you know that poop little square lego bricks. manimmal Posted October 8, 2018 Report Share Posted October 8, 2018 Ged has finished up :( He's in Orbost now, about 4 hours east of Melbourne, and to my knowledge only trading on eBay. Dandy Pete is now Hallam Pete, about ten minutes east of the previous location. For high quality 1:1 historic motor racing check the Phillip Island Classic Festival 8-10 march. Organise to pick up rental car from Airport. Sunday 10th, early morning start to drive down to Phillip Island for Historics (Sat a bit of a right off due to jet lag...) . Mon / Tue / Wed drives to Yarra Valley / Mornington Peninsula / Great Ocean Road. Wed afternoon - drop off hire car in City. Public Transport to Grand Prix Thur / Sun. I have a habit of driving on the right Paul As long as you stay south of the border, we'll be happy up here Mind you you'll be missing out on the best parts of OZ. Maybe next year plan for the Bathurst weekend, then Indy car in QLD the following year. You'll see most of the east coast by then. Strict policing,and some quirky manoeuvres keep you on your toes. Fortunately the freeway from the airport eases you into it. Just have a good sat nav, a hotel with valet parking and a tolerance for what to you will seem really expensive fuel prices and you should have a great time... Quote Cheers, Tony. We just did a two week driving holiday through Victoria and the only time it was a tad, umm, tense in the car was driving in from Canberra and arriving Melbourne on a rainy Friday night in peak hour. Me driving, sat nav on and HER navigating and I may have misinterpreted some instructions but still, on the bright side we drove down some streets we probably never would have. Made it to The Windsor, guy came and took our bags and as my car drove off I really hope that was the valet. Recommend The Spaghetti Tree for dinner and there are a myriad of fabulous little cafes for brunch and great coffee. The drive from the city to Lorne to start the Great Ocean Road was easy as. We hadn't been down here since not long after we were married, so maybe 1984. Still breathtaking but the biggest change were road signs in Chinese. Had every weather from lovely spring days to howling gale, rain horizontal and pounding seas. Loved it! From Port Fairy we then did The Silo Trail through western Victoria, really is big sky country. So much better than I expected and totally recommended. Couldn't avoid running over the longest snake I've ever seen near Patchewollock. Paul, don't worry about driving on the left side of the road.
