Hi all,

 

As you may have seen, I've been updating a few of my spreadsheets to be online...

Here is a new one that I have created to assist with gearing choices.

 

And yes, if you are an ex RC veteran like myself, this will be very familiar, especially if you ran 1/12 scale.

 

 

Online SlotCar Rollout Chart Generator

 

 

Note: Rollout is how far the car will travel for 1 rotation of the motor.

Note2: Higher torque motors generally prefer a larger rollout.

Note3: Higher RPM motors usually prefer a smaller rollout.

Note4: Larger tracks in most cases prefer a larger rollout.

Note5: Higher Voltage probably requires a lower rollout.

Great spreadsheet Shadow, quick reference and comparison!

Just multiply rollout distance by any of the vast different motor RPM options available and you have the (potential) distance per minute.

Could RPM be added to the spreadsheet?

I am not sure how I am meant to use that information.

The best instructions I can give are...

 

1. You have a car that is geared perfectly for a particular motor. Eg. 9/27@20mm = 20.94

2. You calculate it's rollout.

3. On another car, with the same motor type, but only 18mm tyres, 9/27 = 18.85, which will be too short.

4. So, we can then work out that to get close to 20.94, we would need 9/25 gearing which is 20.92.

 

In theory, both cars should then perform exactly the same.

In reality, it gets you in the ball park, and you can fine tune from there...

Whilst I could add rpm, I'm not sure what it would achieve. All the results would just be a factor of the rpm larger.

Also, it would just be a theoretical number as no motor will have enough torque at full rpm to actually move the car at that speed...

That said, if people want it, it's not hard to add...

The rollout chart is great, but....

Most of us relate to Kilometers Per Hour better rather than a broken down fraction of that. So need the RPM factor in order to get that figure.

The theoretical factors are the same for all motors. Not taking into account ( and its not relevant as far as the rollout chart goes) coefficients amps and torque bring into the equation.

IMHO - a slot.it Orange / Piranha type motor needs a Rollout of about 21.75...

a slot.it Red motor needs a Rollout of about 18.15

A Ninco NC-1 type motor needs a Rollout of about 23.5

So - using your tire diameter, you can now calculate what gear ratio will get you closest to that Rollout number.....

How does one determine - what is a the ideal roll out Bov

 

How did you come to 23.5 for a NC1

How would I work out the ideal roll out for an NC5 for example?

Trial and error David...

 

And yes, ~24 is about where I start with NC1/BWA motors too.

 

 

Slo1quick, I've added another tab for you, this time, in km/h...

Interestingly, the values are not that different to the mm/revoloution version...

 

Now, I don't believe that it will even come close to the 'km/h' values that are on a Tamiya speed checker, but if it helps you understand the numbers, then it's all good.

Looking at your table it helps explain how an NC1 car that I had mistakenly put an 11t pinion on instead of a 9t set the class lap record and had everyone saying you can't get an NC1 to go that fast :)
