Bargain Chassis And Long Cans

Recommended Posts

Got my first chassis up and running. They go pretty well.

I'd been looking for a home for this Carrera Opel Commodore body for some time. It had a big heavy chassis with the guide well behind the front axle so that put me off tuning it.

But I like the big ugly body so pleased to see it going around.

Still to do - It has big lakeside pipes that exit behind front wheels so I'll move them from the old chassis and fit them to the body. I used the chassis' central mounts on wall plugs but it can rock a little too much, even when just relaxed.

So I might revisit that and try and use the body's existing two rear mounts.

Has anyone changed the front wheels out for something smaller?

On my set up block with the MJK 4205's on the back the guide sits well in the slot with the rims slightly off the deck.

If you use any size tyre on the front wheels the guide lifts out of the slot.

Time to find a cheap source for the front wheels.

cheers

Matt

Yes loving these bargain hunting posts.

I used some spare slot.it group C wheels. They lowered the guide nicely into the slot.

I also had to narrow the front track to suit the body I was using but with the 6 grub screw set up I could remove the 2 outer ones and grind enough plastic away.

For some reason I couldn't help myself and brought 5. Having a very small collection with mainly rally cars the search now begins for some bodies. Thanks to those who have posted their projects so far.

Alexis,

Search for Ebay seller lakartija comes back with nil results, do you have a link to their store or an item.

If anyone is having trouble finding tyres to fit the wheels on these chassis's, I have been making my own Polyurethane copies of some Spanish Scalextric treaded front and rear tyres that have the correct width channel (as used on the BMW M1 and others).

You can see them on my earlier posts of some builds I have started using these cheap chassis.

I have quite a few spare sets if anyone is interested, $3 for a set of 4 (2 rear & 2 front), plus postage (between $1 and $2).

PM or email me if you need any.

Finally finished (well almost, a few finishing touches still to go) 2 of the 3 builds I was going to do using the cheap Avant Slot chassis.

They both run very well, although I had to put a lot of lead over the front axle of the DMC as it was extremely rear end heavy, due to the shape of the body and the heavy motor and rear wheels. I am also working on some new moulds of rear exhausts and under body panels to finish them off and neaten up the rear end, where the chassis are clearly visible because of the low mounts.

So far so good,in cases that i used the chassis' bodyposts no problem. But with some cars ,for example an SCX Ferrari 550 Maranello I used the 2 side holes fof the chassis to create body posts:

34558800850_45e8b9dbf1_z.jpg20170528_173539 by alexisgaitanis, on Flickr

This was not a good idea because the chassis is very soft at this spot flexing too much with hop as a result. So I reconstructed the rear body post

And added suspension which improved handling greatly (on Ninco track).

Another issue that surfaced with track testing was front track, was a tad short but the problem is you cannot fit longer semi axles as they will not go in place the obstacle being the axle uprights themselves. So I reverted to solid hollow front axle Slot.it style independent wheels

A couple of cars that got the full monty (chassis body posts used, wheelbase shortened, solid front axle, suspension fitted) bargain chassis treatment are

-a Carrera Ferrari 575

Cars already done but to be revisited mainly due to the rear body post issue

-MB Ferrari 430

-Ninco Mosler

-Scalextric Merc DTM

Cars under construction

-Cartronic Kremer Porsche

-SCX Porsche GT1

-Panoz

That leaves another 5 chassis to be alocated

I bought a couple of these to try them out. One went in a SCX pro Audi R8 LMP and the other into a Ninco Lightened Ford GT to try them out. They performed better than expected and in a similar league to a NSR Shark 22. With such a long shaft that can be trimmed to suit, I think they're pretty good bang for buck.
