Pre '75 Sports Car 2 Track Proxy

Recommended Posts

Get your cars ready for another great event

The date has been set for the weekend of October 14th

This to allow more time to get cars ready following the last NZ CanAm Proxy

Tony has come up with the idea of having a proxy race for classic sports cars up to and including 1975, any type of sports car

Cars that raced on tracks like Le Mans, Sebring, Daytona, Laguna Seca, Brands Hatch, Targa Florio, Mosport, etc...........

Porsche, Ferrari, Corvette, Cobra, Cheetah, Lola, Ford, Mc Laren, BRM, Chapparral, Lotus, Austin, Alfa Romeo, Jaguar, etc........

There will be 2 classes, one class where the NSR Classics will be bang on the pace as they are and another class for those who want to make their car go faster

The 2 tracks will be Tony's track in Nelson and Tom Orakei Raceway in Auckland

Plastic chassis only

Best of show competition for cars that have been re-painted or white kit bodies

Cars will run for 2 mins on each lane and the total distances will be added for a result for each track, much like the way we race them in a Proxy race

More details real soon so keep checking this thread

Hi Guys,

Branco - well that is the case, more to be revealed very soon.

CharlesX - CanAm cars will be perfect, and they won't need to be exact paint jobs for this event either, so an orange 2E will be fine.

We are expecting to post the final details later this week so keep checking in for updates.

Here is more info, this lot is a draft but enough to get you all building or sorting.

If there are any changes to be made I will post them asap but for now this is what we have...............

The 1st ever New Zealand Classic Sports Car Showdown

This is another fun event for old school sports cars to be held at the Brightwater Raceway in Nelson in February 2017.

You can build your car for either class and then send it to Tony for it to be raced proxy style.

Tony will put his best drivers on the job and race them.

Although this event will be run like a proxy, entrants have the option of attending and racing their own cars if they choose.

The cars will then travel to Auckland to be raced on the Orakei Raceway track with Mike Doo and his team of drivers for race 2 of the Showdown.

All Classic Sports Cars must have raced up to and including 1975, in a major race, Le Mans, Mille Miglia, CanAm, Targa Florio, Sebring, Monza etc……

Ferrari, Chevron, Porsche, Lola, Ford, Matra, Mc Laren, Shadow, BRM, Mercedes, Lancia, Chapparal, Jaguar, Alfa Romeo, Chevrolet, Lotus etc ……….. (any 2 seater car with or with out a roof).

All 1/32 scale model RTR sports cars - NSR, Slot-it, Fly, Thunderslot, Scalextric, Policar, Slotwings, Ninco, Carrera, etc……..

Entrants may enter 2 cars but they must not be in the same class.

As long as the car is 32nd scale and has period appearance, including wheels etc, it will be eligible.

(the Vanquish range of cars are not eligible as they not considered 1/32nd scale)

Prizes will be awarded for…. 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each class and there will be a ‘Best of Show’ award for custom painted entries.

You know it will be a friendly and fun event with the emphasis on racing cool slot cars.

The organisers will have the right to except or decline entries.

You may contact the organisers if you are not sure if your car is eligible to enter.

All Current NZ Proxy Can Am cars will be legible for this meeting as will any legal NSR Classic Challenge car.

Entry fee of $25.00 - if entering a 2nd car, total for two cars will be $45.00.

General car Rules

The cars shall be reasonable scale representations of the original in 1/32nd scale and look the part.

Cars to be a maximum width of 68 mm.

Body

Cars must be complete with a 3 dimensional and detailed interior consisting of at least a driver (head, shoulders and arms), steering wheel, seats and roll bar etc.

Vac formed interiors are permitted but must have a reasonable level of detail and the drivers head/helmet must be plastic or resin.

(mirrors and wipers are not necessary).

NO part of the chassis should be seen through the cockpit/interior.

Chassis

All cars must use a RTR type chassis made from plastic or resin – no metal chassis.

Fitting a HRS chassis or adapting a chassis from another RTR car is allowed, no metal parts other than screws, bushes and lead may be used (metal bracing is not permitted)

Podded or non-podded chassis.

Motor pods must be plastic and may be taped to chassis.

Suspension kits may be fitted.

Lead is permitted but must be within the car (unable to be touched while marshalling car).

Axle bushes may be glued in place.

Only lead or tungsten weights may be used as ballast, metal is not allowed to brace any part of chassis or motor pod.

Only the rear wheels may be driven. No front wheel or 4 wheel drive cars permitted.

No part of the chassis including guide flag shall be visible beyond the body when viewed from directly above.

No part of the car is to rub or scrape on the track surface other than the guide assembly.

Wheels

Wheels and tyres must have the look and ‘feel’ of a scale representation.

(we don’t want to see a classic sports car with Group C type wheel inserts).

Tyres must be black in colour and be a type of rubber or urethane. (silicone, foam and plastic tyres are not to be used)

If in doubt as to what tyre to use, get some NSR supergrips from Tony.

Wheel inserts must be fitted to rims.

Gluing tyres to rims to enable truing is highly recommended.

Coating of front tyres to reduce friction in corners is allowed.

Minimum front tyre width of 7 mm.

All wheels to be covered by the body when viewed from above.

Motor

Any RTR type motor is permitted.

All cars must use an RTR type motor, this eliminates motors like the JK Falcon and other motors that are designed for metal chassis racing.

Custom made magnets and or armatures are not permitted in this race series.

One motor per car.

Motors may be glued in place.

Class A Car rules:

Class A cars must adhere to the General Car Rules and are also limited to the following………

Any commercially available RTR type motor and hybrid motors may be used.

No minimum weight.

Class B car rules:

Class B cars must adhere to the General Car Rules and are also limited to the following………

Class B cars are limited to only using the NSR 20K Shark motor (motors will be checked)

Motor must remain sealed.

If motor appears to have been opened or tampered with or sounds like it could be more than a 20K Shark, then that car will be excluded from Class B.

Motor shaft may be shortened for tire and or body clearance only.

A small portion of the sticker that is wrapped around the NSR motors may be removed for axle clearance only.

11-32 OR 9-28 gears only.

Maximum width of 63 mm.

The guide length (distance from center of guide pivot to center of rear axle) must be less than 90mm.

Minimum weight of 80 grams.

Front wheels must rotate as one assembly (no independent spinning wheels)

No other modifications and or tweaks are permitted

All of the above will be checked during the Tech Check.

Any car may be re-scrutineered at any time during this event.

The body may be removed.

THE ONUS IS ON THE ENTRANT TO ENSURE THEIR CAR COMPLIES WITH THE RULES

Get your cars ready - Dave & Tony. 16.11.16

Hi guys

Are 3D printed chassis eligible?

There are a number available now that are made specifically to fit bodies of models listed above. Fly & SRC models come to mind.

Cheers

Alan

3D chassis would be perfect assuming they are of a plastic type of material, (ya can print metal with some 3D printers)

that also gives you a better chassis then what some of your favourite cars come with

Hi Dave.

Young Paul is also keen to enter his orange Chaparral so his entry can be confirmed too.

Excuse my ignorance but what is a hybrid motor? Is this just a modified RTR motor or something more exotic. A rewind perhaps.

Can you please email me the entry form - charlesxatxtradotcodotnz.

Hi All, well the first round of the Pre '75 Sports Car Proxy has be run and without a hitch.

I can say all the cars all performed really well with the team from Nelson and guest drivers from the far north (Dave and Dion) making the trip down to help, thank you.

Look at the attached spreadsheet and you will see the times your car did and note that each driver, Matt, Tony, Dave and Dion, did a mighty consistent job after Dion qualified them on Friday.

The cars are now in Auckland waiting for the 2nd round and after this I will award prizes for best overall best scratch build and most enjoyed car to drive by all the drivers.

Thanks to all entrants and although there was a small attendance by the Nelson Club I’m sure there will be another proxy for these cars next year.

Special thanks to Donald for running the computer and doing the points and also Alan and Bruce for race control and marshalling on the day, and thanks Chris for turning up even if we got the time stuff up!

Sorry to Mark (Branco) Millings as his car turned up today, Monday,,, and yes he is a postie! Thanks to Tony and Sue for hosting another cool slottie weekend, always a good time in Nelson.

And thanks Mike for posting the results, I wish I had the ability to post pix again.

Cheers everyone - Dave

Hi Guys.

Sorry for the delay in running round 2. We are setup to run it this Sunday morning from 10.00am which is coincidentally the same weekend as Aust touring cars round series at Pukekohe - go the Kiwis!

Will be interesting to see how the cars go on a smaller tighter track but suspect won't make any difference to the front runners.

Will post results as soon as possible, good luck everyone!

Okay Rnd 2 is completed. Thanks to our drivers Alex, Paul, G and Rod and marshals - Dave and Mike. We had a good run, most of the cars were pretty good to run. Just one damage report Sue's wheel fell off before start of her heat, easy fix. Dave will provide a more detailed briefing on the Round. Results and comments on cars below. Top 4 finishers were Thunderslot cars .....hmm wonder what Tony has left in stock.

I'd like to thank the Mike's team for yesterdays race. Round 2 of the series has been completed with no drama at all. (too old for any drama)

Mike did his usual great job of hosting the event, we all had a great time and a huge THANK YOU to all of the guys that entered cars, we are honoured to be able to race them for you.

The drivers done a wonderful job of keeping the cars circulating without over doing it, these guys really know how to get as many laps in the 2 minute time frame as possible.

Rod drove on green lane with Paul on red, Giovanni on white and Alex gunning on yellow lane.

We opted not to qualify the cars, instead we chose to seed the cars based on there results from race 1. This did save some time but also wear and tear on the cars.

Doing this also turned out to be a good thing. That is, when you qualify the cars they end up racing in a group that are bunched together with other cars of a similar pace.

This sounds like the thing to do but it does have 1 drawback as we noted while running this race.

The drawback is, running cars side by side may be at the detriment of overall laps completed due drivers not being able to get the most out of each cars while trying to avoid the risk of accidents.

As we chose to run them in the order they finished the last race we saw during this race that cars were not dicing with each other so much and as a result there were a less de-slots and track calls because of it.

The cars were spread out a bit and had more room to run without a car right next and no real need to take it real easy so less offs occur.

Although there still was a race going on it seemed more like a time trial for each car rather than an actual race.

This may be a better way to conduct a proxy, it certainly netted a better result for each car.

The wheel fell off Sue's red T70 during a lane change and was sorted without any loss of track time, better then than during racing.

Some cars really stood out for the drivers and they were CharelsX's M6, the same car that has done many proxies and has just simply got better each time it enters a race, it just simply runs very well and is so nice to drive - well done Chas.

Sue's red T70, a Monogram body on a HRS chassis is also another lovely car to drive and with that paint job it looks so cool buzzing around the track.

Mike's Matra is also one of those cars that runs awesome, it too is a top contender and has taken out the win for Class B. Well done Mike. 'Your check is in the mail'.

Then we saw a Thunderslot benefit, the top 4 spots were taken by these cars.

All 4 drivers noticed these cars are naturally 1 level ahead of anything else. Hats off to Thunderslot, they have raised the bar with this new design.

I was on marshalling duties and watching the cars race was made it all worth while.

Two of the drivers had done their most laps ever for a 2 minute run with these Thunderslot cars.

One more note of interest is that the lap times of these cars are similar for the 2 different tracks, pure fluke as both tracks are quite different.

Thank You again to everyone involved, the cars will be returned to you real soon.

Dave.

Nice write up Dave.

I have always had the belief that a proxy event should be run differently to a club night. The best host/track driver should run the cars in the best lane. This would avoid track calls and faster drivers trying to overtake slower drivers. It would also speed up each round as less participants are required to host.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Cheers
