branco
Hi all, Have sent results of qualifying and race for Dave to post later. 3 of Nelson's finest drivers were invited to take part in the Westport round of this year's NZ Group5 proxy. Unfortunately they weren't available so they sent down Alan Simpson, Chris Narbs and Tony Cook. I was the 4th driver. The 3 Nelson guys have never raced on the Benmill Raceway before but they did drive these fine cars in Nelson just 2 days ago so that should be an advantage. Donald Hornal graciously came down from Nelson to assist in the smooth running of the event. All cars had their braids cleaned prior to the get go and I must say I was really looking forward to seeing how well this year's group of cars were going to handle the very tricky Benmill circuit. I will now bore you with my driving thoughts on each car..... Dave C Toyota lacking speed and would let go exiting corners without warning. gas41T Capri fast and good grip. peter gunn m1 fast but shudders. bossman capri performs like a Russian athlete on steroids, gold medal potential. aquakiwi m1 fast but no grip. orakeiracer m1 superb allround car. difinity 935. very large guide broke timing sensor which caused a delay in proceedings. spoke to Dave and guide had to be trimmed, fast but no much grip. nitro capri fast not quite the grip it needs to challenge top cars. wobble escort. great looking build, good grip but light in the front causing wheelies!!! Tony cook Toyota nice car, good grip and handles well. narbs m1. A very neutral car. Drew vessey Mustang. Great looking car. Very fast, front lifts on hard acceleration. I didn't do this car justice in qualifying. wobble capri. fast but loose when pushed hard. orakeiracer capri. great car, handles well. difinity m1 another neutral car. nitro lancia. fantastic car. could really get it S@#t and it came back for more. gas41t 320i great car, should go well in race. tony cook 935. no grip or top speed. Branco 320i. Home track, very similar to sister car of Gas41T. Capricorn7 Capri. Again a neutral car. Average speed and average grip. branco
Wobble's escort and Nitro's Lancia. What do you call a group of Capri's....Fast The strong German contingent looking for the beach. A Yank being followed by the Japs 2 cars that were identical in qualifying. The 935's can't find the opposition. Orakei Racer
Whew, thanks Branco and your team, that's the fastest Round 2 turn around I've seen in Proxy. I only just finished reading the results for Round 1 but I'm not complaining! Congrads to Bossman. Can't get much closer for the top 3, great to carry on the battle with Bossman from Can Am. Particularly happy the M1 found a track that suited it's setup. Watch out for Drew's Mustang, suspect as it get's more run in, it will be a real threat. Also good to see there is a serious battle developing in the mid pack. Bring on Round 3! Hi Dave, can you check your points allocation for second round ....umm, I think you mixed my Capri points with Gas4It's Capri. Drew Vessey
Awesome... Congrats to those on the podium..It looks like it was some close racing... Thanks to the Benmill Raceway crew for running the event... Just one small thing i was looking at the points so far for the rounds and noticed that i only received 78 points for the round, should it not be 94 points for a fourth place finish? difinity
Got to read the report properly tonight. (Just back from Vietnam). So sorry about the timing - difinity 935. very large guide broke timing sensor which caused a delay in proceedings. spoke to Dave and guide had to be trimmed, fast but no much grip. Guide was standard slot.it wood track - same as M1. Hope it is better now then... Tony (Difinity)
branco
Hi Tony, your 935 was the only guide to give trouble, it was scraping the bottom of the slot all round my track. Your M1 was fine. David Carter
I had the same problem with my can-am car on Wazza track in Christchurch it had to be trimmed also not sure if it is in the rules at all now but I do recall it being mentioned at one stage that it is advisable to trim about a 1mm off of wood guides as some tracks do have a slightly shallow slot depth than others I find that a couple of cars in club that have them do scrape the bottom in a couple of spots on my track but not enough to effect the car I will check and add that info into the rules for guides for future proxy's Quote Holdens rule the rest just drool slot cars are my drug, ATCC/Bathurst proxy host NZ Grp5 proxy host. charlesx
Hi David. If it is still being used I thought Orakei Racer track in Auckland was only 5.?mm. I recall SlotsNZ has had trouble with deep guide before. I had deep guide in my Canam car but only because set-up left normal guide very shallow. If not still there should there be a max. depth - say 6mm or what you consider appropriate depending on Auckland. branco
I looked thru the rules on Sunday but couldn't find anything regarding guide depth. David Carter
I have have a quick read as well and there is no mention of guide depth I will add something in for next time Quote Holdens rule the rest just drool slot cars are my drug, ATCC/Bathurst proxy host NZ Grp5 proxy host. nitro0440
the slot depth on my track is about 6.5 mm as the track surface is only 9mm thick , so a slot-it wood guide will be to long unless it is shortened ... If you go back to the very early canam proxy's , it is mentioned there how a few tracks had shallow guide depths , so recommended longer guides be trimmed , but was never made part of the rules . In the early proxy's (canam) track hosts were asked to provide information about there tracks , so that car builders would have an idea of what worked and what didn't on each track .
