Wobble
I've just been fluffing around with my sidewinder Torana and also had a Scaley Escort on the bench at the same time. This started me thinking, so I took some measurements and I'm quite convinced a shortened (about 10mm) and narrowed (about 5mm) Pioneer Mustang chassis might make a really interesting conversion and a more usable car. I think I'd like to see it running with the 'tin tops'. There's a chassis sitting there awaiting a new home, so which Escort for the chop? Alan Mann's, no it's too pretty although it would probably suit best. Edited October 25, 2015 by Wobble

shadow_rusty
Yep, nice neat job there... I really wish Scaley would stop putting a piece of the body onto the chassis... Totally ruins the look of the car when you add body float, and makes it impossible (without removing it from the chassis) to lower the body... Drifter
Hey _Rusty how did you go with your Torana? Where exactly does one put the lead in the chassis of a Torry? Quote www.sydneyslotcars.com
Wobble
Not much room for lead in there eh Drifter? Can I recommend a Pioneer Mustang chassis in it? makes a world of difference to drivability. So, 10mm exactly will need to come off the length of the Pioneer chassis to suit the Escort wheel base. I'll use the drop saw for this. The rear of the chassis won't need a lot of trimming to fit. I put brand spanking new tyres (Scalextric W8543 Mustang front tyres, same as Escort) on the hubs and put the Escort front axle in the Pioneer chassis to get some idea of what needs trimming. Not much more than a couple of mm all around. Choice of body posts here and unsure which route I'll take as yet. Rear of chassis trimmed and probably would've been just as easy to take it back to the chassis mounts as this would allow for body float. 10mm removed from the chassis and I decided on taking a magnet pocket out to leave the meatier parts of the chassis to glue together. shadow_rusty
Hey _Rusty how did you go with your Torana? Where exactly does one put the lead in the chassis of a Torry? Sent a request to my brother for a photo of the chassis as he has his Torana back...Got it going very nicely indeed... Best change was to replace the 9t pinion with an 8t one. Very little difference in a straight line, but WAAAAYYY more brakes... ps. Looking forward to seeing how you get on with this one Bram... Not a lot of room under an escort shell... Wobble
Nope s_r, not a lot of room at all, but there'll be more room to add ballast by the time this is finished. It'll need it to stop it tipping over when it's taking on the Trans-Am cars chassis glued with super glue and JB Kwik and tooth pick reinforcement, can't wait too long for glue to set Wow, glue's set already, Woo-Hoo ... now to take 2-3mm off each side and trim the front Edited July 12, 2017 by Wobble
Drifter
I'd really like to see you cutting that on the drop saw, then again maybe not :-) Quote www.sydneyslotcars.com
Wobble
I'd really like to see you cutting that on the drop saw, then again maybe not :-) It's not as bad as it seems Drifter. I use a block against the side of the MDF and tape the chassis down with double sided Tesa tape up against it and while cutting have a piece of 45x45 behind it so it just can't go anywhere and cut very slowly. The good thing about it is the cuts are parallel even if not square. Front trimmed immediately at front of chassis mounting holes, might still be able to use these with small posts and might help reinforce the front as well. sides trimmed, I cut all the flat bit off each side sanded back the inside of the sill until the bottom edge is almost pointy, Scaley Camaro axle holding it in place although these are the hubs I'll use on a narrower axle albeit with smaller tyres and side on, I'm sure no-ones going to count the wheel studs Edited July 12, 2017 by Wobble

Drifter
Nice result. Sounds like you "know your way around a drop saw". More importantly, how to do it minimising any potential risk. Quote www.sydneyslotcars.com
Wobble
Classic 70's stance there not for long Dave, the front axle is now 45mm (up from 41.5) and the front track is just 2mm narrower than a Scaley mustang and the rear outside hub measurement will be 1mm narrower than a Mustang and by the time I round out the wheel arches a little bit (red line) it won't be a lot different to this, which is just about how it looked before I started Edited July 12, 2017 by Wobble

Wobble
Rear tyres are Scaley Trans Am trued down to 19mm and front tyres just trued down enough to be round. 45.5mm piano wire rear axle with Mustang/Camaro hubs, the spur (Slot. It 18:36) side hub had to be reduced to 8mm wide. Total axle width 52.9mm, 0.2mm narrower than my Scaley Mustang Once the tyres were trued this allowed me to see what needed to be done to the wheel arches and they've been rounded out a bit. Rained off work this afternoon so had a bit of a push on this. Hopefully up and running for 18k 2 & 4 dr saloons tonight rear chassis mounts cut off and 7mm holes drilled in chassis to use as front mounts and a mount off a derelict chassis used for rear mount mounts pushed up through the holes and JB Kwik again just need to trim off excess on underside and start on body posts Edited July 12, 2017 by Wobble

Wobble
And on the home straight, just a guide and some wires, a bit of ballast and some 3'n'1 oil rubbed into the tyres and out the door. Interior trimmed from top of wheel arches to just behind roll bar and a piece of NSR tyre box glued in and painted co-driver removed excess bits of plastic removed from bottom of interior and sides trimmed a bit for clearance chassis sides trimmed a bit too NSR 7.5mm 12 tooth pinion, rear of motor mount slightly filed out and NSR tyre pack packing in front and as good as finished Edited July 12, 2017 by Wobble
