Thought I'd start a seperate thread for my Semi-Permanent layout...

Currently it's tentatively named "Mt. Rustymore".

Thanks Branco...

Stained the crate with used motor oil, and it's come up nicely...

Then, to give it a purpose, I added some tyres...

Motor oil, fantastic, easier than embers 5 different types of paints wipes etc. and looks just as good.

Not a dig at you Emb's

Yep, nice and easy, no skill required... Just dabbed it on with a paper towel...

Stained many a real pallet with used motor oil... lol.

Different oils will give different results.

Most new motor oil are slightly yellow.

Used motor oil gives a nice weathered 'grey' look as above

ATF can give a nice red hue too.

There are downsides though...

It will smell till it's completely absorbed...

Also, as it doesn't actually 'dry', it can, and probably will, 'flow' through the grain after the initial application.

Thanks Kiwi...

My view is that you almost never see a pile of pallets without some being broken...

The current plan is to stack the broken pallets by the side of the garage, and the complete pallets will have 'stock' on them.

With my son's help the 4 'new' ones took about 2 hours to make including 'staining' them.

I can see that you have the same fork truck drivers up there that I had down here! Trouble is that they tended to only break pallets that had pails of ink stacked on them, so they arrived very "stained".

Just don't paint them Blue as the Rep will arrive and try and charge HIRE Fee!

That's just too damn funny Phil...

ps. My son asked me to make a forklift truck next to 'move them arround'...

Unfortunately that's way beyond my skills to do...

  • 2 months later...

Did a little more work on the hill at the back on the weekend...

I'll try to get some pics up tonight...

Also, I've been thinking that the wall on the top section was far too tall, but rather than shorten in, I'm turning it into a dual tripple purpose wall...

1. Race track wall.

2. Retaining wall for the mountain.

3. Spectator wall.

Given that, the mountain doesn't finish flush with the top of the wall anymore, but it is instead ~20mm down.

Now to find a nice texture for the wall (suggestions welcome) to print out, stick on the front and fold over to the back...

Should make it feel more like scenary, and less like black platic garden edging...

Currently looking at something like this, but finding large enough images so as there isn't too much repeating is proving difficult.

SR,

All pattens will repeat, I have found the best ones are those that have similar sized & coloured pattens, this way it is not so noticable.

The image you have have a couple of large rocks which stick out like dogs.....

Something like these maybe

Hi - not sure whether there would be anything suitable but maybe a fish tank background would work?? Nice long patterned pic and reasonably cheap?

(Maybe not one with plants on it though!!)

Thanks guys for the ideas, and Phil, that link is great...

Printed a couple of test images based on the one I did above just to see how it will look, if I get the 'feel' I want, and if it's worth the effort...

Here's a first look at the 'hill'...

And I couldn't believe just how good the wall looks, even with the dodgy 'shutterstock' watermark on them...

Wall looks good, maybe a bit of moss or vines or something similar will soften the join lines.

Just working on another test print...

Using this for the wall...

And then a combination of these for the barriers at the base. (http://www.cgtextures.com/texview.php?id=56538&PHPSESSID=m8li6fll7uqsvlqir119g89jt4)

Nice name

Sponsors could be Oxygen Digital, Orrcon & Evian

Can you give banner some transparency so you get a bit of the jersey showing through.

This image doesn't show it well, but the jersey is showing through...

It's most visable on the right hand side of the left hand jersey wall.

Also, there just isn't much detail where the text is...

The blue part was done by adjusting the colours on that part of the wall, and the writing has ~20% transparency.

The sign writing is deliberately 'new' but done on 'used' jersey walls, as apposed to the sign writing done on a new wall and aged.

I did notice though that I used an old version above...

Here's the current one...
