drw21
2014 NZ GROUP 5 Proxy Series 2014 Hi Guys and Girls, this message is to announce the beginning of the 2014 NZ GROUP 5 Proxy Series. Below is enough info to get you started with time frames etc. More serious info will be posted once I finalise a few more details, hopefully not too much longer. Entries will be open for 3 months during May, June and July 2014. If a car turns up after August 1 it will incur a late entry penalty. There is a maximum of 8 of each model (irrespective of livery or brand) that can be entered. eg; no more than 8x BMW M1 cars in the series regardless of brand and livery. Resin bodies are permitted however as with all Group 5 cars, they too will need to look like a Group 5 car fitting Group 5 specs with period correct sponsors, race numbers, engine and wheel detail so that they resemble what ran in a Group 5 race. Cars can be sent to me for the ‘Tech Check’ at any time before August 1, my postal address is Dave West, 8 Vintage Drive, Henderson, Auckland 0612 New Zealand. Cars will be checked as they arrive, if for some reason a car doesn’t pass the ‘Tech Check’ I will contact the owner via e-mail and go from there. Once the car passes the ‘Tech Check’ it will be safely impounded until required for the 1st race. Just like the recent CanAm Proxy Series there will be 8 Races that make up the Group 5 Proxy Series but only the best 7 results will be included for the points tally. Entries will only be accepted once full payment has been processed and received with entrant’s name and car details. Entry fees for the 1st NZ GROUP 5 Proxy Series will be NZ-20.00, AU-20.00, US-20.00, EURO-15.00, this is to cover the higher cost of sending 2 cases around the NZ tracks. If you are from outside of the Auckland area it would be best to e-mail me [drw21@vodafone.co.nz] for payment details, that way I can keep track much easier, I wouldn’t want any one to miss out. If you have any queries don’t hesitate to e-mail me at drw21@vodafone.co.nz I will answer any question that may arise but please read all of it as most answers can be found there. (I will be posting more info in due course) Entries open NOW - Entries close (last day to entry fee) July 31 - Cars to drw21 before August 1 GROUP 5 Race Dates and Tracks Race 1 August 9 Orakei Raceway Auckland Race 2 August 23 The Rock Raceway Taranaki Race 3 September 6 Bowman Raceway Taranaki Race 4 September 20 Thunder Road Hawkes Bay Race 5 October 4 Race 6 October 18 Topp Slots Motorplex ChCh Race 7 November 1 Brightwater Raceway Nelson Race 8 November 13 Drew’s track Auckland Edited October 27, 2014 by drw21
charlesx
Hi Dave. Is para 5 correct. Canam style events? Also you mention correct colours etc. I would have thought nGroup 5 would be as much a fantasy livery type of event. I know of at least one aspiring entrant that has painted his car a fantasy livery. Would suggest stipulation however that livery at least look part (like my white NASCAR is to NASCAR cars). Note 5 car limit in para 6 on car types. Are there actually sufficient prototypes available to not unduly restrict entry. Regards Chas Le Breton
drw21
Thanks Chas, all corrected now. Let the fun begin!!!!!!!! ps- I'm gonna enter a Sideways BMW M1 - Dave
kalbfellp
I would like to see some rules! But at present I will enter a Sauber BMW Group 5 M1 No 62 Blue and White Olymus sponsorship. It may be a Sideways or Scratchbuilt depending on the rules! Quote Phil https://www.hobartminiaturecarclub.com/ Email
drw21
NZ GROUP 5 Proxy Series 2014 CAR RULES These may change slightly but not much if at all. I will keep you all up to date of any changes. You can start building with what is here. These are based on the CanAm car rules as they work very well to allow enough work to be done without having to go crazy to get a good result. BODY - All GROUP 5 cars must be reasonable scale representations of an original style of Group 5 Saloon, 1/32nd scale. Fantasy liveries are ok as long as the car looks like it would have run within the time frame of 1976 - 1982. If a car turns up with something modern like Red Bull as a sponsor for example then it won’t pass the ‘tech check’ as Red Bull wasn’t around within the time frame of 1976-1982. No external alterations to size of wheel arches, wings, or roof line allowed, other than for the purpose “correcting” one RTR model of similar lineage into the correct body characteristics of the actual version which raced in a GROUP 5 race or to replace a material type - eg; replace for instance a rigid plastic strut with a “tear-proof” or flexible facsimile to make the body more durable. nb- wipers, tow hooks, mirrors and antenna are not required and may be removed, all other body and interior detail must be in intact. All GROUP 5 cars shall be fitted with a detailed 3 dimensional interior with dashboard. The roll cage, seat, driver with helmet, shoulders, arms and steering wheel must be resin or plastic. Vacuum formed drivers are not allowed. NO part of the chassis should be seen through the cockpit/interior. All GROUP 5 cars have a maximum width of 67mm - this is for body, chassis and all wheels. Resin bodies are permitted. Vacuum formed bodies are not peremitted. Bodies must have a minimum of 3 racing numbers in the standard positions. All cars must have all windscreens or other clear parts normal for that model. The window material must be transparent. Wheels must be centered in the wheel arch, +/- 1mm. No part of the chassis including guide flag, wheels and tires shall be visible when viewed from directly above. Bodies to be secured to chassis using mounting screws, or manufacturer’s clipping systems, eg HRS/HRS2. These may be run “loose” if desired, provided the body does not fall off during qualifying and racing. Internal material may be removed to facilitate wheel/tyre and chassis/body installation. There is a maximum of 6 of each model (irrespective of livery or brand) that can be entered. eg; no more than 6x Lancia Beta Montecarlo cars in the 2014 Proxy Series regardless of brand and livery. CHASSIS - Original RTR chassis if used, should be retained from the guide mount to the front of the rear wheel openings, excepting for any shaving and sanding for tuning, and any alterations performed to move the guide, or to enable fixing of alternate motor mount or pod, or for fixing of the body. You may use as your base, a podded or non-podded chassis from such as, but not limited to Slot.it, Ninco, MBSlot, or NSR, or graft/engineer an RTR or home made plastic chassis of podded or non-podded type or graft a pod from one maker into another chassis. Modified chassis must be one piece between the axles apart from motor pods. You may then fit any of these chassis types into a legal plastic body/resin modified or mass made plastic or resin body. Metal motor pods are not permitted. This will give entrants a choice as to how much engineering they are willing or able to undertake. Free choice of gears, axles, guides, braids and motor lead wire. The location of the guide mount may be altered to facilitate better engineering, provided it remains within the normal chassis underneath the bodywork. Only a single guide is permitted. A reasonable amount of plastic may be removed from the area between the wheels to enable the chassis to fit under the body shell. A reasonable amount of material may be removed from the area between the chassis ribs to allow fitment of a motor/axle cradle. A minimum ground clearance of 1.0mm at initial scrutineering is required for all entries, as measured from the front axle to the rear of the car including, chassis, gears, and bodywork. For remaining rounds, a minimum clearance of 0.5mm as judged on the same basis is required. Any car not meeting clearance requirements will be run at host’s discretion only, and shall incur a points penalty at each round it fails to meet clearance standards, as outlined in the penalties schedule. No metal objects shall be fixed under the chassis (location screws are exempt). Gears shall not touch the track surface at any time and are subjected to the clearance rule. BRACING - Plastic or printed circuit board may only be used to brace chassis and components. Metal material is prohibited as chassis bracing with the exception of the following: A brass sleeve may be inserted in the guide mount hole to allow fitment of a smaller diameter guide post. The guide mount may be strengthened with a metal material. Metal rod, plate or tube bracing may be used only between the motor and the rear of the axle/chassis/pod. WHEELS/TIRES - ALL wheels must be fitted with 3D wheel inserts replicating the styles of the period the 1:1 car raced in. Wheels/tyres must not run outside the cars bodywork, ie. if you see wheels and or tyres when viewed from above then they are illegal and must be fitted so as to comply with this rule while still complying with all other rules. No foam content allowed in the tyres and no ‘space saver’ or Delrin front wheels allowed. Front wheels must be in contact with flat surface when tested on a set up board – no tripods, and must be the same diameter full width apart from reasonable “profiling” of the edges for a maximum of 1mm either side. Minimum front wheel and tyre width of 7mm = scaled 9 inches on original car. Front tyres may be ‘zero grip’ type or have a low friction coating applied such as nail polish, so long as the coating is clear not coloured, and is solid and stable, ie, does not leave a residue on the track. Free choice of rear rubber/urethane tyres from the following recognized manufacturers only; being BRM, Ninco, NSR, Slot.it any series except silicon. Ortmanns, YellowDog urethanes, Paul Gage (Canada), Tassie Tires and MJK etc…. Tires must be black in colour, grey or any other colour tires are not permitted. NO SILICON TYRES WHAT-SO-EVER. No rear tyres may be treated with any chemical products such as - but not limited to - WD40, NSR tyre oil, etc, prior to submitting for entry. Tyres shall be cleaned by hosts using only clean water, and/or ordinary brown packaging tape to remove physical residues. MAGNETS - No traction magnets allowed in any shape or form, this means that “magnet motors” such as the MBSlot ‘DoDo’, blue can Avant Slot motor, etc. are prohibited. A maximum magnetic field down force from the motor magnets of 30grams as measured on a magnet marshal has been set. Any car exceeding this up to 50gms down force will be permitted to compete, but a points penalty shall be applied for ALL rounds of the proxy race. Any car exceeding 50gms down force at scrutineering shall be excluded from the race. WEIGHT - No ballast may be used on any external chassis or body surface ie- ballast used must be mounted above the bottom of the chassis and within the body. Ballast may not be fitted to the bottom of the chassis or outside of car. MOTORS - Any commercially available motors and hybrid motors can be used with the exclusion of ‘rare earth’ magnet and ‘strap’ type motors. Custom made magnets and or armatures are not permitted. The onus is on the entrant to ensure that their car complies with the rules. Edited May 2, 2014 by drw21

drw21
Entries are open and will be until the end of July 2014. I will be over seas from mid May till June 12th, this is why I have opened the entries earlier than initially planned. During this time I will not have any access to a computer to see how things are progressing or answer any queries. Entries will only be officially accepted once full payment has been processed and received with entrant’s name and car details. Payment needs to be sorted to ‘lock in’ your entry. Entries close (last day to pay entry fee) July 31. Cars to drw21 before August 1. If a car turns up after August 1 it will incur a late entry penalty. If you are from outside of the Auckland area it would be best to e-mail me [drw21@vodafone.co.nz] for payment details, that way I can keep track much easier, I wouldn’t want any one to miss out. Race #1 will be on the Orakei Raceway track the weekend of August 9 with qualifying the previous Tuesday night. 2014 Group 5 Proxy Series Race format There are to be 8 races, however only the best 7 race results go towards the championship title. All racing is to be of a timed format only. Total race length of each race is to be 8 OR 9 minutes. The minimum total race time per car should be no shorter than 8 minutes total race time. eg. 2 minutes per lane on a four lane track, and 3 minutes per lane on a three lane track with partial laps recorded in no less detail than 10th of lap. Race Points All cars will be allocated points based on their overall finishing position of each race irrespective of their class. At the end of the race the winner is awarded 100 points, 2nd place gets 98 points, 3rd place gets 96 points etc………(no points will be awarded for qualifying) At the end of the final race, the worst race result for each entrant will not be counted for the class championship, ie; only the best 7 results from 8 races will count towards the 2014 Group 5 Proxy Series championship. If any Penalty points are incurred during initial scrutineering they will be taken off the earned points from Race 1. Any other Penalty points incurred will be taken off the earned points when appropriate. Hosting a Round Prior to the series beginning all Hosts shall supply details about their tracks. These details will be shown on the Auslot forum thread for all entrants to consider while preparing their cars. This is so entrants can get a ‘feel’ for the type of conditions for which they must build a car to handle. Each track used is to have a minimum of 3 lanes plus electronic/PC timing and lap recording. Each car is to be raced in a fair and equal manner, and subject to the same track conditions. The preferred/recommended track voltage is to be between 11 and 12.5 volts however it is recognised the Host will determine what is best for his track conditions, but should be at equal for all cars. Details should include - Track surface type, and whether the track is run “clean” or “rubbered up”, depth of slot, number of lanes, power supply/voltage, software used etc….. Guidelines for hosting your round The Host should test the cars during the week before the race. All Hosts should ensure that all cars have the minimum clearance according to the rules before each race. If you are concerned about a cars ride height and that it may cause damage to the track surface contact the car owner or DRW21 and explain your concerns. The only accepted method of tyre cleaning for this series is clean water and/or brown packaging tape, no chemicals are to be used. When qualifying is run, select the lane to be used for qualifying and get one of the most consistent and experienced drivers to qualify all the cars. Qualifying is best to be kept minimal - 5 to 10 familiarization laps and 5 to 10 “hot laps”, try to avoid running any car more than say 15 laps in total during qualifying as wear is an issue for entries. This must be fair for all. Remember to keep track of times, etc to post in the results. Entrants are always interested in feedback and performance. Where possible, I encourage round Hosts to use the spreadsheet in electronic form, carefully checking you typed in the right number as this will save Mike Doo a lot of time and keeps the results more accurate. The race Host should organize for enough skilled drivers, marshals and note takers to run the actual race. Each driver is to remain on the same lane for the duration of the event so that they get to drive each car under similar conditions. Prior to the race Hosts are to check all the cars and clean the braids and tires as required. The cars can be set out in the running order to save time and make things easy for the Host. Running order shall be, the 3 or 4 slowest qualifying cars (according to lane numbers of the track) run first as a group and complete all their heats. Then the next group of cars are run and so on……. with the top qualifying cars being those last to run. The race is then run with the cars rotating across the lanes and the drivers remaining on their lane. After the race has been run, the Host is to check all cars for damage and undertake repairs where possible etc (contact the car's owner and sort out what needs to be done.) Then box them up and post/deliver to the next Host. The results need to be sent immediately after each round to DRW21. Any queries can be addressed to DRW21 => drw21@vodafone.co.nz GROUP 5 Race Dates and Tracks Race 1 August 9 Orakei Raceway Auckland Race 2 August 23 The Rock Raceway Taranaki Race 3 September 6 Bowman Raceway Taranaki Race 4 September 20 Thunder Road Hawkes Bay Race 5 October 4 Chris Wong Hawkes Bay Race 6 October 18 Topp Slots Motorplex ChCh Race 7 November 1 Brightwater Raceway Nelson Race 8 November 13 Drew’s track Auckland Edited April 23, 2014 by drw21
