gazza
I was asked if i could put this up on the forum by Ian from MJK When Dad turned 50 he took an interest in slot cars, what started as a hobby soon developed into a serious passion, Richard his son-in-law also enjoys the same hobby. He met Sandy Anderson another avid slot car racer and together they decided they would form their own slot car group named the V8 Club, they asked Michael Kenney, Dave Boden and Ian Goodlan from MJK to participate in the club. Dad built the hard bodies of the cars for MJK, they were vacuum formed which were far more difficult to do, he also made the windshields and interiors. Ian told me that dad perfected the technique of mass producing and the quality of the work he produced far exceeded others that were on the market. Michael, Dave and Ian would produce the chasis, tyres and motors for the bodies and then the cars were sold to enthusiasts like themselves all over the world. For the last 10 years Dad was also the financial controller for the V8 Club, he organised the Xmas dinners, schedule of events for the year and even made the perpetual trophy until he was not able to do it anymore, he reluctantly had to buy the other trophies. Ian told me that the perpetual trophy is given to the winner of the slot car race meets for the year and the group has decided to turn this trophy into his legacy and honour Dad by changing the plaque on the trophy in the memory of Keith Gear. Michael is going to laser cut and change the image on the trophy to something that represents Dad and his art. About 4 years ago Dad entered a worldwide competition he had heard about for home made slot car tracks and was voted 2nd best track in the world, he came 2nd to a fella in Germany I believe. Dads track has had many additions made to it since that competition. Another track was made by KA & R Joinery for the Thunderbird Raceway National Meeting, the track is still in use and will be used this year again for the national meeting. Dad is well known to other enthusiasts across Australia and he has met and inspired so many people with his incredible technique and ability. He has spent many hours with Ian passing his knowledge on so that Ian can continue to produce the bodies in the same way that Dad did. I hope Dad knew just how much you thought of him. shadow_rusty
Best wishes to the family and friends of Keith. Alas, I did not know him, but his memory will most certainly live on in the hearts of many in this wonderful hobby.
