branco
Hi folks, Having recently sold 3 of my routed tracks I think it is about time I built another. Sold sold sold The new one shall be 3 lanes, braided, variable PSU and timing by Trackmate (get ready for more business coming your way Slotsnz). Measuring just 4.8m x 1.2m (limited space!!). Yngwie
Nice work Branco. 1.2m is a bit tight as mine is the same width but the racing is close as a result.
charlesx
Hi Branco, Looks like your routing work is getting better all the time. Hope these other tracks are going to good homes. You might even find yourself with somebody to race against one day. Here is hoping. Regards Chas Le Breton
branco
Yes Yngwie I'm not happy with the space I have available for this project but beggars can't be choosers. Close racing would be ideal, I looked at putting an overpass in to help keep lanes even but I would have lost more lap length. I can always build another track if I'm not happy with this one lol. branco
Hi Charles, I am glad people are buying my tracks. Had no comebacks so far. Just doing my bit for the Slot car world. Once this track is up and running I shall advertise locally to see if I get any interested parties in starting up a club. I so wanted to race the 12 hour Enduro in Wellington but have decided to put money into this project instead. I also have 3 single lane rally tracks ready for next years WRP proxy, I always wanted a round here in New Zealand. branco
Question; will 1 power supply unit (psu) be sufficent for 3 lanes or do I need one for each lane? I have 3 of the old Scalextric 13.8v units I can use but was gonna see about using a variable voltage jobby. charlesx
There are plenty of people with more knowledge than me but a single variable power supply should be more than sufficient. RTR cars draw less than 1amp. Make sure it is regulated so no power surges occur. You can buy a suitable supply for less than $200. Beauty of variable supply is you can change voltage to suit car type raced if required and also to run motors in etc. Regards Chas Le Breton
shadow_rusty
A single psu of sufficient amperage will be fine... SlotsNZ
I vote with Charles and Rusty. That particular one is very tidy. Jaycar stock them, but a bit expensive one-off compared to Oz. http://www.jaycar.co.nz/productView.asp?ID=MP3800&form=CAT2&SUBCATID=999#3 Same PS, a bit cheaper via Trade Me http://www.trademe.co.nz/electronics-photography/other-electronics/adaptors-chargers/auction-598202389.htm Here's a good 2nd hand one on Trade Me http://www.trademe.co.nz/electronics-photography/radio-equipment/amateur-radio/auction-600130996.htm By specification this looks to be a DS-3800 that Dick Smith used to sell. It is a linear (heavy) variable voltage supply originally made by Manson in HongKong. branco
Cheers for the knowledge gentlemen. So, I will have 6 wires from my 3 rather nice driver stations (i get them off some dodgy nice, helpful slot car distributor in Napier) which need to fit into 2 connections on one of those psu"s. do I use something like a "chocolate box" to achieve this? shadow_rusty
I reccomend a fuse in each positive wire, and then you can just twist the 3x posative and 3x negative together and wrap them arround the screw terminals on the power supply... SlotsNZ
That jaycar psu is the same as the armchair one at nearly double the cost... I think your ozzie parts bin tries to make all it's profit from NZ to subsidize you guys LOL Actually, not twice. If you take the 6+ price of $142, convert to Oz dollars at .82, and reduce GST from 15% to 10% it's not a lot different. - AU$112 Quote Recovering Lapsed Slot Addict * Custodian of many used screws (mostly loose ) * Total kidder * Companion of other delusional slot addicts
Stubbo
I used this set up for my three lanes. One wire from each terminal on the power supply up through a connector. Then the positive through a fuse box with a fuse for each lane. Quote Alan Stubbings

kalbfellp
I would rush out and buy the Dick Smith version, they are a great clean supply. If you intend to use a relay to switch the power for races then much easier to use a single pole relay between the supply and a terminal strip then separate to each controller station. branco
Been a bit of a delay but things are now progressing well. Nearing completion, just gotta paint some rumble strips (dunno how to do this but o well), Lay braid(looks time consuming). Once track is up and running I shall be looking at selling it. I really have enjoyed building this 3 laner but I now have access to my full garage so I can build a bigger version. (yes doctor I am still taking my medication!!!). munter
That Hobbiesplus power supply looks great. Is the Dick Smith one the same? Couldn't see a link. I should also say congratulations to Branco for getting stuck in on the track build. It does take a lot of energy.
