My Car Collection...

I'm sorry, I misunderstood your question...

The person that threw it away probably didn't realise it was a slot car and just thought it was a car clock...

There is a company at our dumps that have the scavenging rights. They have a shop that you can browse through...

It's mostly junk, but sometimes you get a bargain...

Yes well, she has now made a new rule, every dollar spent on cars or track equals a dollar I have to give her...

My hobby has just doubled in price... :(

Made a couple of changes to the Caterham sorry, the 'Lotus 7' today...

First up, I've changed the Scaley 18k motor for a BWA 15k motor...

I used the connector spring from the front of one of my AutoArt Lambo's, and created a new 'tail-shaft' from an old armature...

For the Centre Bearing, I used a piece of the old armature's Comm, and put a piece of brass tubing over that to make up the right thickness...

It currently has a 'standard' 9 tooth pinion, but it dearly needs an 11 tooth pinion...

I also added a little bit of lead,...

Not too bad of an effort for just using scissors and a craft knife...

It's approx. 13g in total...

The correct gear ratio is dependant on the tyre diameter...

As the Caterham has very small tyres, it needs slightly higher gearing...

The Ninco 550 also runs a 15k motor, that it has an undergeared rollout of 21.7mm

The Caterham on it's standard gearding is massively undergeared with a rollout of 19.5mm

With a 10t pinion, it will be the same as the Ninco at 21.7mm, and with the 11t pinion, it will be about 23mm...

Also, to put rollout into perspective, this same motor used to be in my Truck, with a rollout of 29.5mm, which was definitely a little high...

The tyres on the Caterham are only 18.5mm...

Rollout = Tyre Diameter * Pi (3.14) * Pinion / Spur

So for 20mm tyres, a 10 tooth pinion would yield better results at a rollout of 23.2mm, which is the same rollout as the 11t pinion with the smaller 18.5mm tyres...

A big thanks to Darren and Peter for most of these...

  • 2 months later...

Had some fun tuning quite a few cars with my mate today...

2 of the biggest improvers were my Fly Porsche 935, and his Fly Lancia Beta.

Both are now very drivable, and turning decent times on my track...

Porsche has 2 Chuppa Chup sticks hot glued in to increase rigidity, and 20g of lead up front.

Lancia had less clearance to the interior, and has 2 toothpicks hot glued in to increase rigidity, and about 15 grams spread at 1mm thick everywhere we could fit it. Also had to notch the pod screw hole and the pod's tongue to move the rear axle forward as it didn't sit in the middle of the guard, and hence rubbed.
