Graham Lane
Mini Monte Carlo …this is the BIG one! A slot car version of the most famous rally of all. From Mini to Mustang, from Fiat 500 to Ferrari 308, from Saab to Subaru, from snow to sun, from 1911 to 2011…the Monte Carlo Rallye has it all. And we’re going to create it…in miniature. This is indeed the BIG one! These days there are two versions of the ‘Monte’, the WRC and the Historique. We shall be running both! The WRC version will be for modern-day cars trying to beat the clock. The Historique version will be for classic rally cars trying to match a target time. The event will take place in October 2013 (exact date to be decided) and incorporate the Italian round of the SCX World Rally Championship for which there will be a separate class. Stages will take place on a variety of rally tracks in and around Umbria with the final stages on the Castellano rally track. WRC This part of the event is against the clock for fastest times with modern-day rally cars. The rules and start year has yet to be decided. We’re open to suggestions. There will be a special class for SCX WRC cars as three of the stages will be run as a round of the SCX World Rally Championship. Historique This part of the event is a regularity trial for precious, rare, or non-competitive Classic Rally cars. Drivers attempt to meet a target time which will be set at a reasonable pace, in the same way that the Mini Mille Miglia was run. The penalties are the same for running over or under this time. This also gives spectators a chance to see these cars being driven at more realistic speeds besides adding a completely different element to the event. The rules will be much more relaxed for this, allowing scratch-built chassis for example.. Proxy entries For entrants who can’t attend the MMC. Privateer entries For individual entrants who can attend the MMC. Team entries For suppliers, clubs, or groups of entrants who have at least three drivers attending Works entries This class is for slot car manufacturers to enter one or more of the eligible cars they manufacture with ‘works’ driver/drivers to drive them. Drivers can be chosen by manufacturer or provided by the organizers. Eligible cars This is by no means an exhaustive list of the historic cars available as I keep finding new ones! However, it does give you a taste of what is available. If you can provide documentary or photographic proof that a car has entered the Monte Carlo Rally then it will be allowed to enter the Mini Monte Carlo, but please check with the organisers beforehand. Remember, you can convert plastic kits as well as motorise resin bodies for this. All cars must be fitted with driver and navigator. Graham Lane
The date is fixed at the weekend of the 5th and 6th October 2013. The Mini Monte Carlo rally will be held on the Saturday. The Italian round of the SCX World Rally Championship will be held on the Sunday. The venue is Oasi Verde ai Pozzi, the sports and community centre just outside our local village of Castello delle Forme in Umbria. There are Ryanair flights from London Stansted to Perugia (15 minutes away) and we can arrange pick-up from the airport so you don't need to hire a car. For those flying in to Rome there are rail links to our local station (2 minutes away) and we can pick you up from there. We can also arrange local accommodation for those wishing to attend and the earlier you book the better. Graham Lane
Finally, here are the rules. I hope I haven't missed anything. MINI MONTE CARLO RALLY 2013 Rally Description The Mini Monte Carlo Rally (MMC) takes place on 5th and 6th of October 2013 at Oasi Verde ai Pozzi (sports and community centre), Castello delle Forme, Umbria. It will also incorporate the Italian round of the SCX proxy World Rally Championship for which there will be a separate gategory running under separate rules as laid down by the organizers of that championship. The rally comprises three distinct categories – the WRC, the SCX WRC, and the Historique. WRC This section will be open to cars that competed in the World Rally Championship 1997 to 2012. See list of eligible cars below. The cars will be run against the clock for fastest time on each stage. SCX WRC In addition, the Mini Monte Carlo rally will incorporate the Italian round of the SCX World Rally Championship. Cars competing in this class will enter under the rules of that championship. Drivers will be selected by the organisers of the MMC. Historique This event is open to all cars that have competed in the Monte Carlo Rally up to 1997. See list of eligible cars below. This list is by no means exhaustive and any car can be entered provided the entrant can provide documentary proof that the car took part in the Monte Carlo Rally. Cars compete to match a target time laid down by the organisers. There will be two or three target times from which the entrant can choose. For example a Metro 6R4 would be much faster than an Austin A35 so the choice of target time will reflect that. Due the regularity style of this category the rules, shown below, are very relaxed. RULES WRC These rules supersede any previously published rules. These rules do not apply to cars competing in the SCX World Rally Championship, which is run under its own separate set of rules. All other cars competing the WRC category of the Mini Monte Carlo must comply with the following rules. The onus is on the entrant to ensure that their car complies with the rules. There will be no allowances if you cannot make a particular model comply even if it is on the eligibility list. Please think carefully about your choice before deciding on what to enter. Only one car per entrant is allowed in this category. 1. Body Body must be as original RTR. No additional material to be used to modify the body other than updating wings, etc. as per 1:1 car. The body must be fitted with a three-dimensional interior consisting of at least a driver and co/driver (minimum of head and shoulders), steering wheel and two seats. Vacuum-formed plastic is acceptable. All cars must have all windows, as fitted to the original 1:1 scale prototype. The window material must be transparent. Vacuum-formed plastic is acceptable. Plastic pieces glued individually to the window frame are acceptable but must be fixed securely to the body shell. No resin bodies allowed. 2. Wheels & Tyres Wheels are open to any brand but must have a wheel insert or be a one piece wheel with sufficient detail to represent the style of the period of the model. Rear Tyres are open to any size and make of rubber or urethane . Silicone tyres are prohibited e.g.; PPR Super tyres, Slot.it S1's, Puma Paws, Indy Grips, etc. Sponge and foam rubber tyres are prohibited e.g.; tuna type. Wheels and /or tyres shall not protrude beyond the outer edge of the wheel arch opening Front tyres must not be any more than 1mm smaller in diameter than the rears. 3. Chassis The original RTR chassis as fitted to original body of the car must be retained. Motor pods are allowed if fitted to the original chassis but must be screwed up tightly. Traction magnets are prohibited. No aftermarket or scratch-built chassis allowed, plastic or otherwise. Chassis may be braced as required with a non metal material, eg plastic or PCB sheet. Brass, aluminum, steel or any other ferrous metal and carbon fibre are not permitted. Guide flag mount may be replaced but pivot point must remain as original Ground clearance - a starting clearance of 1.6mm is recommended under chassis with a minimum clearance of 1.2 mm under the chassis including the gear. If your car does not clear the track it may not get run until the problem is fixed. The entrant's name must be indelibly written on chassis. Use either your forum or real name. Body screws should be retained within the chassis in a manner to stop them falling out. 4wd cars can be converted to run as 2wd. 4. Weight No limit on weight. Ballast must be firmly attached and lead must coated with paint or lacquer. Ballast fixed under the chassis must be completely covered with tape 5. Motors Open motor choice 6. Other Parts Open choice of body mount screws axles, gears, guides and braids. 7. Technical Inspection All cars will be inspected by the rally director before the first round for compliance with the rules. The onus is on the entrant to ensure that their car complies with the rules at the technical inspection. Should a car not comply the entrant will have the option of having it returned to rectify or withdraw. Minor non-compliances can be rectified by, and at the discretion of, the rally director. 8. Modifications, repairs & Pre-event Checks Once a car has passed a technical inspection its technical specification cannot be changed. Specifically: Gear ratio Motor specification Guide type Wheel / Tyre size and compound In the event of a mechanical failure, components can be replaced but must be of the same spec as originally entered. Historique Both driver and navigator must be fitted. This can be vacuum-formed, injection-moulded or a combination of both. Ground clearance - a minimum clearance of 1.6mm is recommended under chassis including the gear. If your car does not clear the track it may not get run until the problem is fixed. No limit on weight. Ballast must be firmly attached and lead must coated with paint or lacquer. Ballast fixed under the chassis must be completely covered with tape. Traction magnets are not permitted. Resin bodies are allowed. Windows must be clear. Chassis may be constructed from any non-ferrous material – plastic, PCB sheet, brass, aluminum, carbon fibre, etc. Wheels are open to any brand but must have a wheel insert or be a one piece wheel with sufficient detail to represent the style of the period of the model. Wheels and /or tyres shall not protrude beyond the outer edge of the wheel arch opening. Silicone tyres are prohibited eg; PPR Super tyres, Slot.it S1's, Puma Paws, Indy Grips, etc. Foam rubber tyres are prohibited eg; tuna type. Entrant’s name must be clearly written or labeled on the underside of the chassis. Entries There are four types of entry in each category. Please note that in the WRC category only one car per driver is allowed. In the Historique category any number of cars can be entered. Proxy and Privateer entries compete for the same awards. Proxy entries For individual entrants who can’t attend the MMC. Privateer entries For individual entrants who can attend the MMC. Team entries For suppliers, clubs, sponsors, or groups of entrants who have three drivers attending driving three identical make and model of car. The three drivers don't have to come from the same country and each driver can only be a member of one team. Works entries This class is for slot car manufacturers to enter one or more of the eligible cars they manufacture with ‘works’ driver/drivers to drive them. Drivers can be chosen by manufacturer or provided by the organizers. Works entries can also enter as a team provided they have three attending drivers driving three identical make and model of car. Conditions of Entry The entry fee, shown below, includes return postage where applicable. Any surplus funds after costs will be donated to Alzheimer’s Research Trust and Fragile X. Entries will close on 1st August 2013. Entry fees must be paid by that date. Entry fees are not refundable. Consideration may be given in exceptional circumstances and will be at the discretion of the organisers. Cars entered by proxy must arrive by 1st September 2013 for scrutineering and allow sufficient time to rectify any issues with entrant’s cars. Please notify Graham at graham@laportaverde.com when cars have been posted. Entry fees WRC Only one car per entrant in this class. 15 euros.
