Groundhog Day

Ok, given I work at Ged's I'm always going to promote the place (there I go again). Now at Ged's, just like any place else, there are some things you just can't get localling, or indeed nationally. Avant slot is my example for today. I can get an Avant slot car for about $70 landed, which for what they are is cheap, in fact my Kremer Porsche is now down to a 3.23 at Ged's, that is quicker than most NSR's. I digress. I purchased online from an American store (which doesn't need to be named, this isn't my point) an Avant inline motor mount for my Lancer Rally Proxy car, and light weight windows/interior. The motor bracket came, and so did a 'Lancer' interior, Hmmm, my rally car is not a raid car, so that's OK, Avant do a Lancer Raid car so let's be honest, we're human, and as much as some of us hate to admit it we all from time to time make a mistake, plus I'm sure my boy's SCX Pajero will get it fitted soon.

So, I left it, I mean a $7us part returned for $13aud + $13aud postage to get the right one back just isn't worth it. Anyway, as fate would have it another inline bracket was required, and I took the opportunity to give the store the benefit of the doubt and ordered the bracket and the 'same' interior and windows for my Lancer, ie the right part. I was careful to point out that I didn't get the part I expected last time, and the part I wanted was windows and interior for a rally Lancer.

Happy days, I now have two light weight raid car interiors. Now if I was in a position to go to a shop that stocked such a piece, and was presented with the wrong one, I can simply say "NO, for a rally car". Instead I now get to contact online store to moan and grumble, knowing full well the futility of the excersize.

Lesson - If you can buy locally, do!!!

It could be suggested that our friends in the US can't tell the difference between raid and rally cars, not being fans. Remember, they only deal with cars that look alike and go in circles. ;)

"they only deal with cars that look alike and go in circles" OUCH !

Someone get Ember her morning coffee and calm her down a bit.

I would give a etailor some degree of a break if they seemed at all inclined to make good on the error. Sounds like this one was quite happy to sell you the wrong parts again.

Here in the states, we mostly have to shop on line. Retailers are few and far between. I would gladly pay a premium to go into a store and pay a premium for the pleasure of purchasing a part that I can hold in my hand. I am green (British racing green) with envy when I read posts about "going to the slot shop...."

last time I did that I was 9 years old, and it was 1970.......

race cars turning to the right, like they can actually do that.........

Of course that implies that the store will have one in stock for you to say no thanks that is the wrong one....

I was thinking about this the other day as I went to the 4th shop chasing a particular DVD - if you know what you want and aren't in a hurry to get it online is the best.

My most recent online experience vs real shopping - Online look it up compare prices find the best price check stock order wait for the postie.

Shop - search the shelf can't find it - ask the assistant - he says try over there - can't find it - oh well we will have some in next week - go to another store - repeat step one. Drive to another shopping centre - repeat step one and step two. Go home unhappy that you visited 4 shops and couldn't find the Lion King DVD in any of them.

I now buy just about all my slot car parts online - easiest way to shop :)

cheers

 At 4:30pm it's closer to beer o'clock than morning coffee Johnny.

I hope you made the most of slot car shopping in person while you were in Paris buddy. Good luck finding a decent inexpensive French wine. :)

There is a reason for this DM.

Disney have a weird way way - or money making way of selling their animated films in the home video market.

Its called the Disney Vault = The "Disney Vault" is the term used by Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment for its policy of putting home video releases of Walt Disney Animation Studios's animated features on moratorium. Each Disney film is available for purchase for a limited time, after which it is put "in the vault" and not made available in stores for several years until it is once again released.

This is why it will be difficult to find some of the stuff.

The trick is - when K-mart, Big W etc have the kids movies on special or availalbe - just get them - sooner or later it will be on your list either for an immediate family member or relative gift etc.

If it doesn`t have wheels and an engine it`s not sport!

Actually it's incredibly cheap Ember, I spent an entire month in Paris and would drink huge amounts of outstanding French wine for no more than a few euro a bottle each night! (Don't even get me started on how cheap European beer is over there!!!)

Now buying decent French wine in Oz, well that's another matter. :)

Buying a decent anything other than domestic here isn't an inexpensive experience. Just as well I like my Coonawarra reds. :)

Isn't the beer cheaper than water in Europe?

Way cheaper than bottled water...I was buying 10 packs of Stella for 2.80 Euro! Multiply by 1.3 and that's cheap Italian beer. If you were happy to drink 1664, etc. (French beer) then cheaper again!

I don't think cheap and France can be used in the same sentence. A croissant and coffee in Paris, oh, probably 11e' at least at any place I could find.

we are on the coast, west of Cannes at the moment. Spent yesterday in Antibes and Monte Carlo seeing how the poor people are forced to live.

driving is great fun along the coast, well, fun for me anyway....

France has been great, sure it lacks the history, culture, art and the fine food of the central USA, but, god love them, they are trying just the same.

no slot car purchases, because I would have no way to blame Miveson for them. Carolyn bought a vintage f1 car and a Ferrari race hauler model at a shop at the casino in Monte Carlo, she is buying models and I am not for a change !

I prefer to remain ignorant of what this is costing. However, the Ferrari and Bentley coupe parked just outside our lobby is making me nervous !

now I know how Carolyn feels when all of those Miveson boxes arrive at home.

off to drive the hills for one last afternoon before returning to the land of corn !

That's a Kronenberg 1664 isn't it? OMG 2.8 Euros for 10 x Stella's - 330ml bottles? Best I stay in Australia then.....

Yep, called 1664 because it was founded in Strasbourg, France in 1664 - Bloody nice even if it's a little sweet. Probably the best beer I've had in years is the 1664 Blanc, haven't found it here in Oz yet.

Bottles only 330ml although they had some 250ml as well.

We can only assume she is buying them for the other men in her life. ;)

Wait until you get home Fly.........plenty of coupe's waiting for you me.

What ever you do, don't buy a monte carlo t-shirt. I bought one about 20 years ago and after the first wash it looked like one of those t-shirts that changed colour based on your body heat. Worst investment of my life..... As for driving the missus was less than impressed about me driving with one hand around some of those beautiful hills with nothing but a little barrier to protect you from falling to an interesting death - looking back now I know she was right, I'd only had my license for about 3 days :)

Manic - there is a certain bar around the corner from me that servers the 1664 on tap in a glass that is bigger than a schooner, I'll admit that it's a bloody nice drop...... and something a little different.

ahh yes, I did my best to rid the world of 1664, but, don't think I made a dent in the supply. Excellent beer and always on tap in Paris. Here on the coast I must suffer with the bottled variety.

I would be homebrewing even more if I lived here just due to cost alone.

more cars on the doorstep, no problem, there is someone there everyday. Maybe we should think about a shipment before e

we need a cargo container for them all. ?

oh went up the coast again. My wife drove back, guess she was getting a bit I'll from the twisters. Fun drive, wish I could have borrowed the Ferrari sitting out front.

sorry for the hijack of the thread guys. Darn French, they cannot be trusted.

So, Mannimal. Have you decided to give them a third chance to get the right Lancer or have you found another source of Avant Slot insert trays?

Computers. They'll never catch on.

Johnny, would you believe I am within 20min walking distance of my local retailer? - Xtreme Trax. However, to get an Avant, I could not buy the Vern Schuppan Gulf Mirage in NSW. And I checked to make sure, so I got it from the UK. I try to buy from actual retailers, the only exceptions being Fly cars, which are unacceptably expensive in Australia. I think retailers are essential to maintaining our hobby.
