charlesx
I have not seen this track yet but owner has had going for a couple of weeks. I am hoping to visit soon (Easter perhaps) and will take some photos to put on AUSLOT when I do. Owner has first built 12x6m garage to house it in and I believe main straight is in region of 8m so I am really looking forward to first look and hopefully drive. A third 3 lane track is also in early stages of planning in another nearby location so we are on the up and up. charlesx
Went out to see track today. All I can say it is magnificant even though Rex in very modest about his achievement. Built from 12mm MDF on wooden frame with 8mm deep slot and 6mm copper tape. First slot has been hand routed and others guided from there. He used 25mm blue water pipe fastened at 200-300mm intervals and had no problem with sag. Track has a fast open layout with nicely graduated curves and some interesting elevations which not only give unsurpassed views but provide easy marshalling. Photos really say it all so here they are: During Construction Up and running Enjoy. I had previously completed a much better write-up but tried to copy before saving and lost so more later. SLOTJOCKEY
Awesome track. That back straight will be fun. The Scalextric controllers will make the cars a hand full though as there is no feel to them. Well done........ charlesx
Hi Mike, Paul and I have both seen track now. Will be even better when scenery done. It is great to drive on but virtually no brakes as you have suggested. Working on owner re controllers. After trying ones at Paul's place now knows what brakes are. Think we have him hooked on getting electronic controllers when $'s available. Ta for encouraging remarks. Could ultimately be a great Canam Proxy track. Surface by the way is black acrylic house paint over grey primer. Acrylic spray coat over top of that I think. Drives very well and is nice and smooth. Good range of corners with no horrible kinks. charlesx
Further progress report. Track has now been rewired so now the same as most of NZ tracks. Fitted with XLR plugs so the likes of Professional Motor controller can be used. We found on further investigation that previous wiring did not include braking circuit so new system will be a real revelation. Rex has confirmed this is the case. Scenery has also been started so more news on that after my next trip to Lepperton. Next step will be to install lap timing gear but more on that later. Casual visitors welcome. Just give Rex a ring on 06-7520509 first. He works early hours of morning so is available most days except Saturday. charlesx
Hi all. Had first run on track last nite with new wiring, electronic controllers and brakes. What a difference. Rex is now seriously considering what timing system he is going to install. Trakmate? Has also made a start on scenery so a few more pictures. This is going to be a seriously nice track when it is finished. Our first club meet is scheduled for Sunday 29 5 2011 so bring it on. charlesx
Hi all. After 6 months racing including a round of the Canam proxy, 2 hour enduro, couple of teams races and much other competition track is to be changed. Rex plans to add a bit more length (main straight is already about 9m but not fast enough he reckons for GT's) plus a big sweeping curve into main straight. Even more important surface is going to be sanded back and at this stage anyway a new paint job similar to SlotsNZ Oakland V2 added (acrylic with 2 coats of Cabots clear). If this works out right should provide a much more even and durable surface so here is hoping. To give Rex a chance to get work done we have decided to suspend racing on Plymouth for 2-3 weeks. SlotsNZ
Hey Charles Grant - (your honourary Team New Plymouth enduro driver) did my top coat painting. He rollered it all with a soft wool roller to get that very smooth but impression of stippling effect. The acrylic was a Resene "enamal Cryl" [acrylic enamel] I actually had a British Paints acrylic enamel, but it was just rubbish when we applied it, so it got a light sand, and we went back to the Resene. The clear Cabot's was "Floor Clear" also water based, which I had left over from the last track. we only put one coat of clear on, over 1) primer/undercoat 2) failed BP grey 3 & 4) 2 coats of the resene grey Of course, if you had an airless spray gun and the shed was dust free . . . . . but the roller does get a good thick coat laid down and floats well.
