Guys here are the rules as Lenny sent them to me! Entry fees are nominal at this time as I believe there may be some money to assist inn reducing this years entry fees. Please give me some feed back how long you guys need to get some cars prepared. As I will be scrutineering the cars this year the first race will be here in Tassie.

The width rule is to try and reduce the possibility of this event becoming a one make series. The maximum body width may have to be reviewed, as I did not have all the cars to measure, BUT the rear width outside to outside of the tyre will remain at 55mm!

13. Tracks and Hosting a Round

A. Tracks are to be purpose built single or dual lane rally tracks. Multi lane race tracks with integral rally circuits are acceptable, provided the track is considered 'tight and twisty' and no long straights. Under no circumstances are rounds to be conducted on race circuits.

B. Tracks are to have smooth surfaces. Elevations encouraged but extreme rough track surfaces that disadvantage some brands of car are not welcome. We are looking for a wide variety of makes and models and not a field dominated by one model only.

C. The intention is to run the rounds at no longer than at 2 week intervals. Your round should be run by the next week end after the cars have arrived at your track. Forwarding on of the box of cars should be in time to arrive at the next host in plenty of time to run the round.

D. Each days driving should be reported back to the forum when completed.

E. An official score sheet should be completed and forwarded via e-mail to the director at the conclusion of your round. A template will be forward to you by the director before the commencement of your round.

F. The postal addresses of next round host and reimbursement for postage costs will be forwarded to hosts by the series director at the conclusion of your round if required.

G. Track owners are to run cars against the clock for a minimum of 8 minutes per round. You can break this up into as many stages as you like, for example, stage 1 on a Friday night, stages 2 and 3 on Saturday night and stage 4 on Sunday afternoon. An additional driver (co driver) may be used to assist in driving at least one stage but must complete a full cycle of cars through that stage. Stages can vary in length and direction, just as long as the total time for the fastest cars is approximately 8 mins.

If you are unsure how many laps to run to total 8 minutes of driving?

Work out the best lap time you expect from a car in this field. Say 6.00 secs. How many laps will the fastest cars have to do be on track for 8 mins? 8 mins is 480 seconds so 80 laps total is a fair guess.

14. DISCALIMER

Entrants should understand that no responsibility is accepted by the organisers, hosts or participants of the OzRally Proxy Series 2009/10 for the loss and/or damage to your cars or parts/equipment supplied either before, during or after the series is conducted.

OzRally Proxy Series 2009/10 Eligibility List

The list of cars is not complete. Additional models maybe submitted to the organisers for consideration. The model must comply with the requirements as set out in the Series Description. Submissions should be supported by both documentary and pictorial evidence of a model’s suitability for acceptance in the series.

After consideration the series director’s decision on a model’s acceptance to the list, shall be final and not open to appeal.

Several of the cars on the list are over 55mm wide, judging from what I have measured.

I would be willing to look at any cars marginally over 55mm BODY width IF the width outside to outside the wheels is still 55mm.

I hope to try and get some more cars to measure during next week.

Yeah its over 60mm the stratos is, measured it tonight.

the 911 is over in both the fly and ninco.

the alfa gtv is over also.

Will look at more tommorow too, just trying to stop people wasting money on cars that arent going to fit the rules. So if you have a car that fits the rules.....be a champ and measure it up to let us all know!

Looks like the old SCX Fiat 124 Abarth will have to visit the shop for a refit.

Glad it qualifies this year.....guess I'll have to get rid of the Fly Porche 911 racing that I got as a possible for this event.

The feed back from last year on the Fiat was that the motor was a light switch and the car was tippy????

Dunno what I'll do but maybe sort it some how.

It came back from last years events with only some of the lights working....the auto electrician says to disconnect them.

Do they have to be working to meet the rules?

The gears are rooted too.

Thanks for measuring the guys guys, great help.

This does raise the question IF we should allow those cars that are only about a mm over width IF the width across the rear wheels is 55mm?

What do you guys think. It would allow a couple of interesting cars to run.

I'll add some more body meassurements:

Alfa Romeo Alfetta GTV GOM = 59 mm

BMW 2002 Spirit = 53 mm

Fly Rally/Racing Porsche 911 = 63 mm

Fly Porsche 911 S/R/RS = 58 mm

SCX Porsche 911 SC = 56 mm

A few other rally cars from the era not listed:

Citroen DS SCX = 56 mm (behind front wheels)

Citroen 2CV PinkKar = 47 mm

Opel GT Powerslot = 53 mm

Fiat 600/1000 abarth SCX = 50 mm

Fiat 850 Abarth SCX

Seat 1430 SCX

VW Beetle PinkKar = 50 mm

I think a track width limit (outer edge to outer edge of tires) is the way to go, that allow most of the cars on the original list. If you look at old rally car pictures many of the 1:1 cars had wide flares but the wheels where tucked in several cm inside the fenders, especially when running on narrow snow or mud/gravel tires. The big flares was there to allow the option to run on wider tarmac tires on asphalt stages.

I would love to run again this year, am thinking of just rehashing my Healey from last year with a new improved slower motor and some judicious rebalancing, however I might be tempted to go with a Cortina as I have one. On the width issue why not just make it 60mm, that excludes the Fly Porsches but allows some other interesting cars into the series and variety, as they say, is the spice of life.

I am measuring a lot of the cars at present, looking at retaining the 55mm across the rear wheels BUT allowing 58mm on the body width that would allow 1.5mm of body past the tyre on each side,so the cars should still look good.

The biggest problem is as Dave mentioned is trying to get 1.6mm ground clearance under most of the cars listed. I will do some trimming an one of my SCX chassis and see how I go.

More very soon.

A public question on a chassis modification I'm considering.

The rules clearly state no scratch built chassis, happy with that. The wheel/car combination I'm thinking about would necessitate moving the bushes inboard, which of course means either some scratch building mods, or a bodge job with some glue. I would consider this a chassis modification and not a scratch build, and thus legal providing the wheelbase is unchanged.

would the scrutineers agree or should i go back to the drawing board?? (with my previous popularity in rule interpretation i'd rather avoid another debacle)

thanks,

chris

My mum says I'm an excellent driver

I think what Manimmal is trying to do is to make a currently illegal car legal by moving the wheels in to 55mm? Is this right Manimmal or have i got it wrong?

Because thats what i was thinking of doing so i would like to know as well! LOL

yeah that makes sense.

Is the field going to be restricted this year Phil? As in the number of cars entered?

Also a side note, if your car didn't get any good reviews last year at all after the races, please dont tinker with it "a little bit" and send it back in. Just get another car to enter, or if you are going to tinker do some major changes!!! Some of the cars were that painful to drive it wasn't funny. Some cars just arent suited to tight twisty tracks, which rally is generally about. Have a look at what reviews your car did get last year for tuning advice and go from there.

Have been reading this thread with interest. Have to ask are some of these cars actually 1/32 scale accurate? This should apply to wheelbase, track etc not just body.

Appreciate there can be a big difference in actual full size cars but have read of some firms taking considerable licence. Apart from that I suppose in real life big cars tend to be heavier and smaller ones lighter and more nimble but that does not necessarily apply to slot cars so perhaps other forms of constraint are justified.

I like the emphasis on trying to get different prototypes racing as in normal rallying field.

Very few 1/32 scale RTR slotcars are true 1/32 scale, so if one wants to organize a proxy based on RTR slotcars you have to accept some degree of "out of scale". Many RTR slotcars are quite close to 1/32 scale, but often a bit too wide.

A few cars are grossly out of scale, but it's quite easy to exclude them. This series have a relatively limited amount of cars to choose from, so making a list of eligible RTR cars is not that much work, and then the organizer can execute his right to include only the cars he wants. A track width limit in addition to a pre-defined list will help to even out the competition and also make it more interesting to choose a car one likes instead of going for the widest body available.

One could go scale crazy, but to include the RTR cars you need a liberal scale rule like maximum 1/30 scale (7% overscale) and that adds too much research work to be worth it compared to the pre-defined car list. In a scratchbuilt proxy with very strict scale rules it would make sense to use a scale rule.

As I see it though ;)

E. Entries will be limited to 30 cars One entry per person.

I am the organiser by Proxy this year and as that I am trying to maintain the original thoughts OR some of when this event was started by Martin. It was to have a proxy for cars and tracks that did not suit any other sort of proxy and to have a fun event.

This event is trying to be a proxy that even a novice can enter and have some fun and learn from.

3. Chassis

A. The original RTR chassis as fitted to original body of the car must be retained.

B. Traction Magnets are prohibited.

C. No aftermarket or scratch built chassis allowed, plastic or otherwise.

D. Chassis may be braced as required with a non metal material.eg plastic or PCB sheet. Brass, aluminium, steel or any other ferrous metal and carbon fibre are not permitted.

E. No motor pod will be allowed this year unless it is an original fitting.

F. Guide flag mount may be replaced but pivot point must remain as original

So moving the axle mounts is a no no!
