INFO FROM THE HOST:

Let the festivities begin in the 8th stop on the SCX Classic Rally Proxy, the Oregon Trail brought to you from the heart of the Great Northwest and though we may be at the end of the Oregon Trail, for you this represents a new beginning. One more day on the road. Another trip through the Hills of Autumn. One more day in the sun. And who will shine? The answers await... But first...

Apparently the rally cars aren't the only ones smelling new blood.

Rico stopped by today and we had Service Day. Here now the results:

Basic service consisted of:

1. Clean and lube motor, gears and bushings

2. Sand tires

3. Clean braids

4. Remove lint and dust - worse on some cars than others.

Cars that were opened were re-sealed and tightened per the listed screw settings.

Not all cars received every service. Some needed "extra" service. Details of each car are below. Please refer to the numbers to reduce my typing.

#1, Ronan: 1, 2, 3, 4.

#3, PeteN95: 1, 2, 3, 4.

#4, Jexy1: 1, 2, 3, 4.

#5, Antony: 1, 2, 3, 4. Removed LOTS of lint in gears and bushings.

#6, Antony: 1, 2, 3, 4.

#7, OnTheFlipSide: 1, 2, 3, 4.

#8, JohnSchoen: 1, 2 (lightly), 3, 4.

#9, Gazza: 1, 2, 3, 4.

#10, OnTheFlipSide: 1, 2, 3, 4.

#12, Timo: 1, 2, 3, 4. Belt came loose on tire true - re-fitted.

#13, PeteN95: 1, 2, 3, 4. Glued split front hub.

#15, OnTheFlipSide: 1, 2, 3, 4. Front screws are missing.

#18, SilverRocket: 1, 2, 3, 4. Removed sticky substance from front axle. Looks like JB Weld or something similar that has not fully cured. Perhaps the car was placed upside down when the cars were in transit and it looks like some of it dripped down contacting the axle. Front wheels turn freely now.

#20, MalatWolves: 1, 2, 3, 4.

#21, Davenic: 1, 2, 3, 4. No guide return spring.

#22, Rico455: 1, 2, 3, 4. Removed glue on front axle. Removed glue on rear axle.Looks like glue "weeped" at some point.

#24, Timo: 1, 2, 3, 4.

#26, KidVoltage - hey, that's ME! 1, 2, 3, 4. Removed excess amount of lint from gears.

#28, Ronan: 1, 2, 3, 4.

#29, ChuckE: 1, 2, 3. Inside of car was clean. Front screws are missing.

#30, MalatWolves: 1, 2, 3, 4.

#32, Antony: 1, 2, 3, 4.

#37, ChuckE: 1, 2, 3, 4.

#39, HBR245B: 1, 2, 3, 4.

#186, 356Speedster: 1, 2, 3, 4.

And there you have it. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Next on the agenda is to finish some track decorations then we'll give them all a few laps and report what we find.

---

About the tracks...

The track here is a three-lane routed track with an MDF surface. I typically run standard rubber and urethane at home. Traction is good with just about everything I have put on it. I trust the SCX cars will do well too but I'll know for sure in a few more days when we actually put them on the track for a test run.

We plan to run on it both Friday night and Sunday.

Friday night will consist of the first two stages.

Stage 1: 10 laps on the inside lane at 10.5V

Stage 2: 20 laps on the outside lane at 12V.

Saturday we'll be at Rico's running on our old Autumn Hills track. It is a 2-lane, 50 ft., Scaley Sport track. It's the track pictured in the event schedule pages. Not sure what exactly we'll do there but expect stages 3 and 4.

Sunday will return here for the final event, a Rally Scramble event where we will run three cars at a time. Timing will be as follows per heat:

Winning car gets true time.

Second and third get true time + 1 second for each .1 segment behind the leader.

For instance...

Car 1 finished in 9.417 seconds.

Car 2 is 4/10 behind and receives a 4 second penalty for 13.417 seconds.

Car 3 is 7/10 behind the leader and receives a 7 second penalty for 16.417 seconds.

The cars will rotate through the lanes using a slowest first grouping - 3 cars at a time. That means that for the first heat, the three slowest cars overall will run a set of 3 heats rotating the lanes with each other.

Heats will be 2 minutes.

We intend to have live video of the events on Friday and Sunday. Not sure about Saturday.

More as we get closer to Friday.

Welcome to the Oregon Trail Rally.

Hello everyone- It was a long day in the pits inspecting, cleaning and lubing all the cars. I was truly amazed by the amount of lint and grime we cleaned out of some of the cars and others looked like they had hardly been run. I found it interesting to see all the different techniques everyone used in building/tuning their cars. Some were fairly exotic and others were mostly right off the shelf. I can't wait to put em through their paces here at Autumn Hills and over at Monte's.

Stage 3 I think I am going to run a Special stage of 5 laps at 12V which will be a real test on the Hills (Autumn Hills) as it is a fairly technical track with no real long straights and lots of turns. Stage 4 will be 25 laps at 10v which is much more managable for this track. This stage may be run under the lights.

CLASS ONE DRIVING IMPRESSIONS:

10 laps at 10.5 V in the center lane. Fast lap listed:

#3 Fiat 124: Drives ok but a little sluggish. 10.610

#5 Stratos: Easy to drive. 10.527

#10 Alpine: Nice running and driving car. 9.712

#15 Fiat 124: 3 offs! A tad squirrely. 10.135

#26 Stratos: Uh, my car, should have got more motor. 10.292

#28 Alpine: Stable but a touch slow. 10.602

#79 Fiat 124: 1 off. Punchy. 9.930

#89 Abarth: 1 off, runs just fine. 10.425

And there you have initial impressions of the class 1 cars. I'd like to point out that the center lane will not be the lane we'll use for the stages except for Sunday of course.

----

CLASS TWO DRIVING IMPRESSIONS

#1 Seat/Fiat: Car will not complete a lap. Took off guide to check. Braid on left top side had thinned out. Spread it back out and re-seated. Car is fine now. 9.345. A little on the tail-happy side.

#4 Ford: 9.345 Smooth but also a little tail-happy when pushed.

#6 Ford: 9.147 Nice, smooth, quiet car. 1 off.

#7 Seat/Fiat: 9.229 Nice car. Easy to drive.

#10 BWMW: 9.306 A little tail-happy when pushed but a fun car. I like this one!

#13 Renault: 9.381 Easy driver with a little tail action. 2 offs.

#18 Seat/Fiat: 9.889 Car stutters a little on my track. We'll take a look at it. Nothing obvious at first glance.

#20 Ferrari: 8.849 Very, very nice running car on this track.

#21 Ford: 9.643 Smooth but a little bit of a tail swinger.

#22 Ferrari: 8.931 Another nice, easy to drive car.

#24 Seat: 9.40 I like this one. Fun to drive.

#37 Renault: 9.165 Nice car. Feels lively.

#39 Ford: 9.353 Another very quiet and smooth car. 1 off.

#72 Porsche: 9.374 Typical Porsche - a little tail happy.

---

CLASS THREE DRIVING IMPRESSIONS

#8 Ford: 9.270 Small handful, tail swinger. 4 offs. Will need to get used to this car, not at all like any of the others. Seems a little light perhaps.

#9 Porsche: 8.961 Nice, fun car to drive. 1 off

#12 Audi: 8.679 Hops on full accel and also coming out of corners. A little on the treacherous side. 1 off

#30 Lancia: 8.824 Nice runner.

#32 Lancia: 9.031 Floats a little at one corner hence - 2 offs

#99 Porsche: 8.641 Easy driver. 1 off from pushing too hard.

#186 Porsche: 9.251 Easy to drive. A little slow comparatively.

And there you have it. I did not push the cars as hard as possible, that would have resulted in even more offs. I just wanted an idea to the general running of the cars. Most should do just fine on this track. A few were a little on the twitchy side but not too bad. All had good traction.

With barely 5 hours left until the start of the 8th event I thought I'd up the tension a bit :P

I punched the times from the test into the spreadsheet, to see if we have some favorites before the event start.

OREGON TRAIL TEST STAGE

Note: These results do not count in the event

test.jpg

It becomes obvious that power and good top speed will be part of the winning recipe in this event, though it looks as John's RS200 has a bit too much of the "good".

This track suits the class separation very good, where the Class 3 cars are dominant and the class 1 cars don't seem to have enough top speed to keep up with Class 2. This is excactly how I imagined this series to be :mallet:

Some cars have really come to life here, like Timo's Audi Quattro, and Antony's Ford Escort MKII. Thats great! those Escorts are so fun to drive, I hope they continue the trend during the event.

Let the speculations begin :chase:

OREGON TRAIL

RESULTS FROM STAGE 1

ss1.gif

Congrats to Craig (Teamred), Bruno (LanciaB) and as usual Mel (Ontheflipside) with the top spots in each class.

I must say I am surpriced how well the old 959's are running on this track, Craig's 959 seem untouchable, and my 959 placed 2nd overall despite the comments on that it was underpowered :D

FYI: My 959 is a bone stock Altaya version, while Craig's has a PRO motor. The funny thing is that we both run with stock crown gears and plastic wheels... :)

OREGON TRAIL

Standings after day 1 (stage 1 & 2)

standing_after_ss2.gif

What a day for the Porsche's! and Chuck is leading both Class 1 & 2, but only 1/3 of the event is completed and today we move to another track for stage 3 & 4.

Will the Porsche's continue their victory runs, or will they get hunted down one by one on the tighter Scalextric track....

The action continues today at noon (12'o clock) PST (USA Pacific time). or around 20:00 in UK, 21:00 in Europe and 06:00 Sunday in Australia (Sydney area).

This is getting exciting... :D

We had a fantastic day of rallying yesterday with live video coverage and chat during stage 3 & 4. I think we had around 25 visitors on the video broadcast that lasted from early morning to around noon  (AUS time).

Stage 3 & 4 was on a different track than stage 1 & 2, and this time it was Rico (reek455) that hosted the stages, and he had his house full of people enjoying slotcar rallying, food, football and the chat entertainment. The atmosphere was great!

The cars have also held up extremely well so far in this series, this is the 8th event and there has not been a single mechanical failure so far, just a couple glued wheels and general maintenance between events. Some of the events have been very tough with rough rally tracks and most of these cars (class 1 & 2) are basically box-stock SCX cars with original parts, impressive.

On stage 3 & 4 there where big differences in grip. I would say the track generally had low grip, so the cars that are set up loose had a very rough time and some struggled to even complete a stage. The cars that usually have almost too much grip and relatively mild motors hooked up very good and did very well on these stages.

There are still stage 5 & 6 to be run later today, and they will be on the same track as stage 1 & 2. I will post the link and time for when the live broadcast begins later. But first let's look at the results from stage 3 & 4 :)

OREGON TRAIL

RESULTS FROM STAGE 3

ss3.gif

Hey hey! I took the class victory in Class 3 on this stage! but congrats goes to Mel (Ontheflipside) with the top spots in both Class 1 & 2, well done mate!

The Seat's where untouchable on this stage, but the competition was very close in Class 2 & 3. Mel's cute little Renault Alpine was superior in the "Small Classics" Class 1.

OREGON TRAIL

RESULTS FROM STAGE 4

ss4.gif

This was a long stage that spread out the cars, and those who struggled for grip really took a heavy penalty on this stage.

The Seat 131 Abarth's where still leading the show.

A big congrats to Silver Rocket for the Class 2 win, Chuck brought home the victory in class 1, and hey another class win for my Porsche 959. Fantastic!

OREGON TRAIL

Standing after day 2 (Stage 1 - 4)

standing_after_ss4.gif

When we where online last night I was sure Teamred was in the overall lead, but the spreadsheet says otherwise, unless I've done a big bummer in the sheet?

The current standing after 4 very different stages shows the true nature of a rally proxy, consistency is king!

Chuck (our beloved SCX representative) has a relatively comfortable 18 second lead in class 1, but with a few extra off's the Alpines will soon catch up, so don't eat your cake just yet Chuck

In Class 2 the Australians dominate the show, and there is a very close fight between the Sierra and the Seat 131. But watch out for Silver Rocket and Malcolm's GTO, they are only a few deslots away :)

In Class 3 my "low powered" Porsche 959 has chewed it's way through all the stages in a nice steady pace. This has really paid off this time, because it's leading the whole event. Nice! Craig's (teamred) 959 has more power and he will be hunting me like a mad dog through the two final stages, this is exciting!

The two final stages will be run later today and they will also be broadcasted with live video and chat. I need to get the excact time for the start of the 5th stage, and will post it here as soon as it's confirmed.

Stay tuned!

Info from the host:

Howdy friends of the slot!

Today's final set of stages is scheduled to start at noon PDT. About 3 hours from now.

The final set of stages (3) will be run as a rally scramble where we'll pit three cars at a time against each other IF we get enough helpers out here to pull it off. If not, we'll run one stage on the as yet unused center lane.

We expect Mon-TV to broadcast the event live, hoping you are the same.

Tune in at noon for the final battles on the Oregon tracks.

The top two cars in Class 3 and overall are separated by a mere 5 seconds. Can the Speedster's Porsche hold off TeamRed? It should tighten up and could get very, very close. Last time the cars met on this track the edge went to TeamRed.

In Class 2 the top two cars are separated by less than two tenths of a second. How much closer could it be? The Aussies are in complete control of that class. But can Davenic's Sierra hold off OnTheFlipSide's 131? Or will the SilverRocket track them down and overtake them both?

In Class 1, the locals are abuzz with the hopes that their local entrant can hold onto a podium position. The mighty Stratos aka 'the biscuit' came to life in the slippery Autumn Hills on the track where it was designed. There's no catching class leader ChuckEhredt's Fiat 124 short of major failure but you can be sure that the Alpines of Ronan and OnTheFlipSide will have their say before the day is done.

And what will the day bring? In three hours we'll start to find out.

You'll laugh. You'll cry. You'll howl at the moon.

The final day of the Oregon Trail, coming to a slot near you soon...

Info from the organizer: I'll post the link to the live broadcast as soon as it starts.

OREGON TRAIL

RESULTS FROM STAGE 5 & 6

Stage was 5 & 6 was a "rally scramble" where 2 matched cars ran against each other for 10 laps, then swapped lanes and ran another 10 laps. Each lane was a stage, and the winner of each stage got the real time recorded, while the looser got 1 second added to the winning time per 1/10 segment he was behind when the winner finsihed the 10th lap. Since each lap is in the 9 second range, this works out pretty fair.

RESULTS FROM STAGE 5

ss5.gif

RESULTS FROM STAGE 6

ss6.gif

Since these last stages determine the final results for the Oregon Trail, I'll jump directly to the overall results in the next post.

Stay tuned...

OREGON TRAIL

FINAL RESULTS

final_results.gif

There you have it

A fantastic result for "team speedster" this weekend, my 959 loved the two Oregon tracks, and while not being the fastest it showcased the importance of being consistent. Mel's (Ontheflipside) Seat 131 was less than 2 tenths faster than my 959 after 3 days and 6 stages of rallying. I beat him with more bonus points. But since the two cars compete in different classes that really does not matter.

Class 1 "small Classics"

1st: Chuck Ehredt - Fiat 124 (Spain)

2nd: KidVoltage - Lancia Stratos (USA)

3rd: Ontheflipside - Renault Alpine (Australia)

Class 2 "modern Classics"

1st: Ontheflipside - Seat 131 Abarth (Australia)

2nd: Davenic74 - Ford Sierra Cosworth (Australia)

3rd: Silver Rocket - Seat 131 Abarth (Australia)

Class 3 "4WD Classics"

1st: 356speedster - Porsche 959 (Norway) :)

2nd: temredracing - Porsche 959 (Australia)

3rd: Antony - Lancia Delta S4 (Australia)

Congratulations to the podiumites!

And a HUGE THANKS to Monte (KidVoltage), Rico (Reek455), AJ (Rico's son) and all the other drivers and participants at the club and at Rico's during the video broadcasted stages, it has been a fantastic event. THANKS...

Now let's see how this affect the ranking on the series score board. Stay tuned a few more minutes...
