  1. It might have taken more than a year since it was first announced, but the new version of the slot.it chip, called version C, is here. The main feature of this new chip is that it is fully compatible with oXigen, SSD and Carrera. On SSD and Carrera it will run as a native chip. As a bonus, the chip is much smaller than any other oXigen chip (closer in footprint to a SP15 chip). For the time being, switching between system will require to flash a dedicated firmware into the chip. To perform this operation you can use your smartphone: it will connect via BT with the chip. Given that I have both SSD and Carrera Digital, I will perform some testing in the coming weeks to see how easy it is to switch from one system to the other. g
  2. After years in the planning, musing, wishing, and mostly procrastinating, I have begun work on a couple of modular table-tops I can roll under my routed track and use to mount plastic track. The imminent arrival of the Policar track system - next Monday to be precise, and my need to have a test bed, gave it a nudge. But it is also the opportunity to create a rally and RAID track that I have wanted for well, most of my time slotting. I can run the Policar track mostly around the outside, crossover etc, then interlace it with the RAID track, using the natural elevations of the hill climb pieces So this morning, full of coffee and optimism I wandered down to our local M10 Mega (That's the Kiwi equivalent of a Bunnings Aussie-Jim), and had the nice bloke shorten some sheets of MDF and some lengths of 40 x 20mm kiln dried pine, to save me a lot of saw time. The two sheets of 6mm MDF have been shortened to 2 metres, as this is the longest I can tuck away under Oakland Raceway. The 40mm x 20mm kiln dried pine is light and fairly rigid. I had them cut 4 lengths of 5.4 metre into 8 x 1,960cm plus the leftover of 4 x 1,460 cm That provides the framing for both tables. The 40 x 20 rings the sheet, and supplies two extra stringers to run length-ways, and all I had to cut was the extra off the cross pieces sticking out below Oh look, the legs of those resin folding tables look just right. - "Off with their heads/tops" On this table I was able to pull the end rails apart, removed the two black plastic frame retainers that clip the ends of the metal frame together when storing away, and use these in the ends of the legs in the new frame to hold the legs up and away for storage. The other table I cannibalised had plastic retaining clips that wouldn't fit the legs there, so I will have to manufacture an alternate solution for table 2 legs And in they go, screwed onto the internal stringers If you do a bit of woodworking and don't own one of these, you're a masochistic mug. Two set screws allow changing of the drill bit - or setting of depth, and setting the dept/width of the screw head rebating. I am using 30mm #10 screws. I can drill a run of holes identical depth, rebated, in about 30 seconds Presto - each table took about 90 minutes start to finish once i had everything ready to go. Next up I am fitting some 10 x 20 off-cuts underneath screwed and glued with construction adhesive to the frame and underside of the MDF, for mounting of the casters this first table will roll on.
  3. With some slot makers gearing up for Nurnberg, we see a lot more activity in new products. I think these will make a few folk happy. Subaru STI under the Policar label A couple of these will grace a set later this year

Hi all with the Nationals being in Dunners this year and with both Tony's events being Nelson; and being the alternate year off from the 12 hour enduro; we were facing having no larger events in the North Island. So with some encouragement from Tony Cook and a few of the unruly great unwashed, assistance from SlotMadMac to host, the Shootout is back; dressed in DTM I have already taken provisional interest from a number of folk, and with entries realistically limited to 24 for the venue, do get your entry in early. This is an event which requires only basic tools, allows only low cost alterations from the car as supplied in the box, and is easy to set up; thus creating a level playing field that will encourage people who have never traveled beyond their home or race group to come and have a go. - One thing I don't want is gun builders making a batch of rocket ships for top drivers from other forms of slot racing. To my thinking that would just spoil it for those genuine RTR home racers stepping up into something new. - But what I would be very happy to see, is our local club guys (or other experienced RTR entrants); adopting a first time traveler or two in an organised "buddy up" scheme for the weekend, to give them some help at the event if they haven't been able to set their car up to typical spec. That would encourage those same new folk to come out and race for the first time. As such, it is essentially a "glue, true and tune" class for Slot.it DTM models the Opel Calibra, and Alfa Romeo 155. (The Mercedes will not be released in time for this event.) As the Opel is slightly wider, and 6mm lower, it would have a natural handling advantage, so I have set up one of each model, and messed around with small amounts of weight in the Alfa to bring the two models to par. This means entrants can choose either model with confidence that they can compete. Setup of these is pretty straightforward. A tune and test article covering both models will follow in April. Permitted changes are - White Kits to be custom painted in a realistic race livery, let's be pretty about this. Cars may have grub screws fitted to the standard chassis holes to set the front axle height and travel Front and rear tyres glued and trued - a small edge profile (curve at edges) can be maintained when you true Pod and body screws can be run loose or tight - whatever floats your boat Motors can be glued and/or taped in place Tape can be applied to the underside of chassis/pod to cushion the pod float (ribbed fibre-glass tape rules) Spacers may be used on axles, pod and body posts where you wish - or not Softer braid can be fitted if you prefer The Opel is to be run without any additional weight. The Alfa may have weight added up to a maximum car weight of 76 grams. (8 grams weight) - (This is to equalize performance between the models on Thunder Road Raceway.) Rear tyres are to be PT1171-N22 by Slot.it (no treating of rear tyres is permitted, before or at event) Front tyres can be Slot.it zero grip or original - you can coat original front tyres with nail varnish or superglue to make them equivalent to a zero grip, that's what I do; saves money. Chassis may be flattened if needed on a steel plate using the typical water bath or heat methods. None of this is rocket science, secret squirrel; or beyond the capabilities of most folk. What we really do NOT want is experienced racers getting clever, doing things that appear to slide into any grey area in the rules, but that would make their car unbeatable, and thus discourage those who are having their first go at competition in an environment beyond their own local situation. If it is not listed as permitted, you can't do it! Simple as that. And the overall rider folks, we are intending to have fun, and run a competitive but friendly, meltdown-free event. There is a very good early article about these cars HERE to give some background on DTM and the cars. The deal. Entry fee for the weekend is $20 per person; which will give us a war chest to buy some of the food and drink to consume on site; and buy the host a thank you gift. I will supply a trophy and prizes. We do not anticipate any drivers attempting to make modifications outside the spirit of the rules, and just aren't interested in nit-picking. This weekend is about meeting drivers from around the country and having fun. Should any car fail scrutineering; Entrant will have opportunity to bring it within the rules during the qualifying round. If he is unable to bring it within standard, the Chief Scrutineer and Race Organiser may impose such points penalty as they deem fit in fairness to other entrants, to enable that car to still compete. Qualifying is by way of best solo lap time by each driver in a one minute period. Race one drivers will drive in reverse order according to qualifying times. Races two and three running order will be determined by points from prior races. We will race throughout Saturday and complete as many heats as possible; then conclude on Sunday. Racing will not extend past midday Sunday; to enable entrants to safely book afternoon flights or drive home.   8. Red Racer is back with some club racing to suit all forms of Slot car fans. Watch this and simular space's for current and upcoming race event's. Friday Night Racing Sideways Dallara and Riley Championship The first installment of Double R Club Racing will commence Friday the 10th of August. Sideways are produced by Racer in conjunction with Slot.It drivetrains. The combination results in highly detailed replica's with performance to match their looks. They have 12 different liveries and have small design changes which made the car's appear the same but perform differently. We have closed the gap on performance by using Slot.it race magnets throughout the 12 cars which has given them the same amount of magnet down force. The cars will be raced in stock form other than the magnet exception for some close racing. Tyres as alway's will be a must to get adiquiet grip and ride height.   9. Well it's been a long time but the dust is finally settling. I thought I'd start this thread to share my thoughts on the whole experience, and I'd like to hear from all of those who participated. I had no idea that the cars would be tuned along the way- I thought they would be run as is aside from anything major like wheels falling off. In summary- I don't think I put enough time into tuning it, and I think I made it too complex. I also let it go despite not being happy with the gear ratio. Thanks to everyone who fixed, fettled or poked at my car. I've learned some valuable lessons and will be contesting some more proxy races. Regards Bry
